I fancy myself a reasonably educated and intelligent person but this one goes over my head…

This weeds out the educated and intelligent. Only those not so much so get it, the ones who spent their childhoods getting sweaty and lying in grass, like me, as opposed to those who spent their childhoods studying and preparing for college/career. I am totally with Eddie on this one.

I must count among those who didn’t get this one. Aside from not being familiar with the unpleasantness of lying in grass while sweaty, the thought simply never occurred to me that the cat would be talking about herself, since I didn’t think that cats were able to sweat.* I thought the cat was repeating something that its prey said, which really made no sense. (*I did look it up before commenting, and it turns out that cats do sweat through their paws. This fact doesn’t really help the joke, though – I can’t imagine that having grass sticking to sweaty paws would be all that irritating, and if the bottom of your foot is your only sweaty body part, then walking in the grass could prove irritating, but lying in it should not pose a problem.)

They aren’t lying in the grass, they’re eating. That’s why this joke doesn’t work.
