Scalia is the most prominent Republican lawmaker of the last decade. Problem is he’s on the court.

You would have a point if there were any evidence of voter fraud using other people’s names. There isn’t. The only “problem” being addressed is too many people voting for Democrats.

Five of FL’s 67 counties are under the Voting Rights Act because of past discrimination. Before every election the feds have to approve the way the county election supervisors in those 5 counties run the election.Last election the feds stopped voter purges that would have cut lawful, legal voters from the roles. If given free reign, I bet thecrazies would take over.

We can start our rants whenever we like. More than half of the successful voter-restriction-by-race lawsuits in the past ten years were in the 25% of the country covered by part 5 of the VRA. Anyone who wants to get rid of the VRA has another motive, and racial discrimination in America is still a problem and is expanding. We need more voting, not less.

In the 60’s I had friends in Mississippi whose black parents didn’t go vote because their white employers ’wouldn’t let them’. They could vote after their work was done, but it was never done before the polls closed. ^There wouldn’t be cries of racism if there weren’t so many actions being taken that look racist. People who complain that the very wealthy aren’t paying their fair share in taxes, or are using their corporate profits to fund political campaigns are referred to as practicing class-ism. There are so many minorities who are members of the 1% it makes one wonder if the USA has a caste system like that in India, where the very poor are “untouchables” and anyone who is not near the top of the caste system is looked down upon by those above them, and not worthy of interest or respect.^Racism, class-ism, or a caste system doesn’t matter. In the United States of America, there is no room for any discrimination among a united people, and that includes Democrat/Liberal and Republican/Conservatives. ^It will be a great day in our nation when this law can be overturned by all of the Justices without protests because there is no longer a need for it among a united people. Sadly, I don’t believe that day has come in 2013. Sadly,C.

If the south isn’t planning to discriminate why would they need to change the laws?? The voter ID law was devised by Repubs to lower Dem turnout at the pols. The same way voter rolls were only purge of Dem voters. Didn’t bother looking at Repub names. This has been a devised plan for over a decade. Bush spent hundreds of millions looking for voter fraud and couldn’t find any. Leave it to the Repubs to ignore facts in their talking points.

I just find it interesting that “mr conservative” Scalia is actually, and often has been, “legislator in chief” on the bench. While he may be the only conservative on that bench who’s actually READ the Constitution, it doesn’t mean he always actually supports it.

Johnson didn’t need “payback”. At that point in our history, many were doubting the long-term viability of the GOP. From Wikipedia:*“Johnson … won 61.1% of the popular vote, the highest won by a candidate since 1820. It was the sixth-most lopsided presidential election in the history of the United States2 in terms of electoral votes; in terms of popular vote, it is first. No candidate for president since the election has equaled or surpassed Johnson’s 1964 percentage of the popular vote.

The Republican candidate, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, suffered from a lack of support from his own party and his deeply unpopular conservative political positions."
