@win Actually, having seen the enlargement (thanks @mabrndt), I’m calling the black thing an inanimate part of the goblet/container. It’s chained to it. Maybe it goes inside and then serves as some kind of lid. It just happens to be in a really weird place right here, resting on her arm and ribs in this contorted pose. Just … disturbing. Next!
I received the following in an email from the museum:
L’Ame du vin is not a painting but an illustration that you can find in the book Les Fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire illustrated by Carlos Schwabe. It was published in Paris, for Charles Meunier (editor), 1900. One copy exists at the Bibliothèque de Genève.
