I have heard that the Conferderate States of America obtained nitrogen from urine ammonia to make potassium nitrate for black powder for the soldiers, due to ports being blockaded preventing import,

Sorry, but the Nigerian girls did not “invent” the urine powered generator. They made alterations to an existing generator to allow it to burn pee. The press has gone bat-shit crazy with this non-story.
