A competitive privatized Post Office would operate with a profit motive and therefore could track its expenses and revenues. It would succeed or its competitors would.
The reason they are failing is exactly what you stated. The prices are too low and cannot sustain the business. Please tell me how they can keep in the black AND keep the 50 cent letters? Many of us want to know!
I realize there are still some reasons people mail letters, bills etc. The problem is we are trying to find a way around the progress of the Internet in electronic bill pay, on line banking, email communication, etc. There isn’t one that can maintain the daily delivery profitably. USPS makes money delivering parcels and almost breaks even by delivering all the junk mail they do with the regular mail. They can’t and shouldn’t be expected to deliver a letter for 50 cents. If UPS, DHL or FEDEx took over private delivery it would undoubtedly go up in cost and decrease in frequency of delivery. That discussion has been brought forth many times. The unions fight it tooth and nail and congress want’s to maintain the “nostalgia” of the post office in smaller communities.
Or the Post Office could convert to electric plug-in vehicles (how far do they go a day on a city route? 20 miles?) , get rid of the old, junker jeepster-looking things and stimulate the economy at the same time!

The price for Gas in the U S is about a quarter what it is in other countries…. Time to raise that too.
