The Post Office is in this mess because Congress has required them to generate ALL of their retirement over five years out of their earnings. No one business would tolerate a requirement like that. Actually, you can blame the internet and online banking and bill pay first and foremost. The profitable aspect of their delivery is packages. Regular mail and junk mail are by no means profitable and will continue to decrease as time goes on. As unpopular as it is for some, I think it’s time to privatize the post office. Any of the private delivery companies would do a better job at less cost. The post office is not like the military, it doesn’t need to be operated by the government.
Your mail price is an issue. It would be something that would have to be addressed, just like rural delivery. I would imagine (and I’m assuming) they would raise prices and have more limited delivery times. It’s inconvenient on some levels but seems to be part of the evolution of technology we have to deal with.

It is only the requirement to fund the retirement and health care for the next 70 years that has put them in the red. This waas done in 2006 to give the PO to Fed Ex and UPS. They can’t even deliver their own parcels. The USPS does that for them.
Had FedEx delivered documents: cost $7.70, sent them back USPS First Class Priority: $2.60, and they got back faster than using FedEx. While it IS “illegal” to put anything in an official USPS mailbox, it isn’t a government monopoly, as both FedEx, and UPS have “package delivery” of documents and letters, it just costs a lot more than at the post office.
Also, when the Post Office was turned into a separate corporation, and in essence “Privatized” some years ago, it marked the beginning of the truly serious “money problems”.
But yes, internet has had serious impact on first class letter writing, but can’t get my pills out of a hard drive, and BTW, when I DID get my meds via FedEx once, it cost almost $20 for a small bottle of pills!!
I figure there has got to be some corporate interest, privatization scheme behind all this. Wonder how much and to whom in congress is being funded for their next campaign by FedEx (no pension, anti-worker).

Now, why would Congress do that? Could there be some corporate investment in trying to get the postal service privatized? Could it be that once there are billions and billions of dollars in that 75 year retirement kitty that some corporate folks would want to take over the postal service and have access to that fund?
Could some corporate types have some idea that they could use that big retirement kitty some other way, like many have done before?
Nooooooo, the House and Senate would never let that happen, would they?

heck to me they can just have saturday delivery and forget the rest of the week. most of the stuff in the mail is junk. So just have one day delivery.
