Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for March 03, 2013
Transcript:
Alex: Why are we in the same panel? Have we ever met? Trff: I think I'd remember. Alex: Continuity! Voice: We're checking it... Mark: Hey fan base! Ever wonder why there are so many little inconsistencies in the strip? Mike: The reason is simple--- Doonesbury is an artisanal comic! Mark: Yes, artisanal-- meaning that each strip is hand-assembled by a local artist using only the freshest gags! Mike: Unlike corporate comics, which are mass-produced from rigid, formulaic specs! With artisanal comics, strips are written under brutal deadline conditions, then hastily pencilled and shipped abroad for inking... Gary Trudeau: Get these on the next flight to Tegucigalpa! Mike: There, proud but under-rested artisans occasionally slip up..." Artisan 1: Oops. Artisan 2: Don't worry about it. Mike: ...resulting in small lapses in continuity and art that only add to the character and charm of the final strip! Man: Why does Zip have three arms? Woman: How odd. Mark: So remember, folks-- always look for this seal! Mike: Artisanal comics-- because who likes perfect? Watch on both wrists. Wrong color hair.

NO POLITICS!! What about those watches in panel 3 – are they Rolex – an implication about rich Republicans? And those books in panel 5 – a slam against conservatives if I EVER saw one!
Come on; not more farfetched than a LOT of comments.

This strip is the best part of my morning.

And the cartoonist is so young!

Love the opening two panels! Great comment and I wonder what the cause of this was? Echos of the “Calvin and Hobbes” battles with the syndication rights?

This is better than P.B.S.’s dead horse puns. The nose switch at the end was a nice touch.

So, that explains it.

When I see Doonesbury on the side of the Met Life Blimp we’ll know he’s gonna corporate.

Yeah, someone is speaking out for us artisnal cartoonists. I wonder where I can get one of those seals.
ironflange about 11 years ago
Coincidentally, this is how Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons were made.

Nice! Perhaps a peaceful Sunday. What a pleasant thought.

now, more than ever, this strip fades to complete irrelevancy & petty (oh how the hell do you spell bourgeios ???) -this strip doesn’t matter so much any more… and today’s supposed spoof is exactly why…
pawpawbear about 11 years ago
Well there goes my Sunday. Bless you Guard SGT.

@annieb1012
Thenk you for your response of last night. I had gone to bed when you posted. Yes I am felling some better. But my backe continues to remind me that A: I’m not as young as I used to be, and B: It’s in charge. All the other points I’m beginning to get my written skills together and will be sending Editorials to he newspapers. May I use your terms for the disadvantaged?
I guess I have an odd sense of humor but I also laugh to keep from crying out in frustation. Besides, some of them claim so much education. I have always said that reading, breeding and raising do not always equal true class.

At least GT didn’t show how the ‘artisanal ink’ is made!

Trespasser !!This is no place to comment on cartoonery, this is a place for political malcontents, social genital-scratchers and the ill-informed to gather and fling feces at each other !!Getcher monkey-dung over there for only 50 cents a handful !!…Otherwise, Heave Off !!

When I started reading today’s strip here, I thought, “WHOA! Why is today’s gocomics Doonesbury different from the one in the Tampa Bay Times?” Then I scrolled down and realized that the TBT had just left out the first two panels. Boooo! I love these conversations with the “fan base.” The strip doesn’t always have to be so blamed relevant.

@John Pike
By all means, use that wording; I doubt I will ever use it anywhere that involves copyrighting.
>>
“…reading, breeding and raising do not always equal true class.” Isn’t that the truth! I know some folks with no credentials to speak of who are more perceptive, kinder, and more constructive in their remarks than some with many years of academics behind them.

Would somebody please explain to me the alleged nose switch? I just don’t see it….

I wonder how the actual inker feels about today’s strip.

Here was the big cover up. A bunch of terrorists attacked the US Consulate and safe house in Benghazi. This isn’t the first time it has happened. In April 1983, the US Embassy was blown up in Beirut when Reagan was President. Seventeen Americans were killed, including the CIA’s top Mid East analyst, the CIA station chief, and most of the CIA staff. Only difference, instead of Reagan’s opponents leading a lynch mob like the GOP and Fox has against Obama, we stood together as Americans. George Schultz did not resign as Secretary of State. Six months later in the same city, the Marine barracks were blown up, killing 241 US Marines. Again, we stood together as Americans. Caspar Weinberger was not forced to resign as Secretary of Defense. As far as the election, I hope you watched Romney’s interview on Fox. He will tell you why he lost.

I get two Sunday papers that carry Doonesbury and neither of them ever carry the first two panels of the Sunday strip. It irks me.
The_Confessor about 11 years ago
I suspect that this comic was largely motivated by the recent mix-up with Jeff and Zipper as they commented on Alex and Toggle’s honeymoon.
Zipper had frequently expressed infatuation with Alex in the past, even calling himself her boyfriend, but in the honeymoon series this trait was mistakenly attributed to Jeff… which was kind of gross, since Jeff (being the son of Alex’s grandmother Joanie Caucus) is a blood relative; a half-uncle to Alex, unless I’m mistaken.
Newshound41 about 11 years ago
In the first panel, Trff Bmzklfrpz is looking at Alex’s belly.Don’t worry Your Excellency, they are not yours.

Why would Bush and Cheney allow the Saudis to leave on chartered flights after 9/11 when all the airports in the country were shutdown?
lindz.coop Premium Member about 11 years ago
It has always been my understanding that GT often purposely puts inconsistencies into the strip to keep us on our toes.
lindz.coop Premium Member about 11 years ago
If we would all stop responding to the folks who seem to hate this comic, they might give it up and just go away. Most of what they say doesn’t even warrant a response — it’s just the boring rhetoric any one of us could hear on any one of the “hate” stations.

“Enjoy, no politics for once”
Are you sure … I though GT was making a statement about sequestering and the Republican agenda to send all work overseas and make super profits for multi-national corporations.

How difficult could colorizing be? Even little kids can paint by the numbers.

Speaking of Trudeau’s “zillions”. . . when is he going to be a good liberal and spread his wealth to those of us who don’t have enough?

ohh! So that explains why mike and some other characters are sometimes drawn without glasses on!
