Oh, come on. She’s her daughter! It is some of her business, or is it okay for your 70-something year old mother to get involved with a strange man halfway around the world?Sure, she doesn’t need to know all the details, but if Evie is talking to Arnold, why can’t Val be interested or even excited for her? Why is it such a huge secret? Oh, sorry, it’s a comic strip with drama… forgot! ;-)
For some reason it seems to be easier for one to skip a generation on sharing information. My grandparents seem to be glad to tell me stories that might have not been so interesting to my parents. My own great-grandfather seemed to be more open with sharing stories of his younger days with me when I was 16 years old than he had with my mother or grandfather. He was also a little more generous with his money with me than with the rest ot the family (He once gave me a dollar to go to the store and get some candy.)It might be that one gets older, one gets more aware of how much they have to share before they pass away and the youngest generation is the one with the most time to receive what they have to give.

I can relate to Val. I live in a home with a husband and son who think my interest in any part of their lives is an invasion of privacy, and each fails to understand that I get “all like that” not because of the information they don’t share, but the fact that I get their information second and third hand.
It’s called being treated like a mushroom — you know, kept in the dark and fed bull-stuff.
Sorry, wrong number. Arnold is the guy gram runs off with every so often to help build houses in torn-down countries. Started with Haiti after the hurricane, then a jaunt to Asia, I think. There are also hints of “something” between them, even though he’s her kids’ age.
