    dheine1971, the Hoover dam was named after President Herbert Hoover. Back in the old days when someone would get a hole in their sock they would mend it through a process called darning.“Dam” and “damn” are homophones.“Darn” (as in, to darn a sock) and “darn” (as in, a milder expletive of “damn”) are homonyms.
