Cathy: Before we go out, Irving, I need to war you that I'm wearing brand-new boots. Irving: Ok. Cathy: The second we walk through the door, the soles will be scuffed and the boots will be unreturnable. Irving: Ok. Cathy: If this evening doesn't go well, I will blame you for making me commit to $130 boots I didn't need!!! Irving: What about the $200 I'm about to spend on dinner and a play?? Cathy: Different thing. You won't seen them in your closet every day.

Let’s call it even. Although you may be reminded of an evening that didn’t go well, you can always wear those boots again, Cathy. Irving’s money will be gone forever. So why don’t you both just forget about the money and make a concerted effort to have a nice evening together?Good morning, Cathy clan! This is one of several reasons women need to re-assess themselves. I get a new pair of shoes/boots/item of clothing to wear, not serve as a bargaining chip or blackmail of sorts.Too many times when I read this strip I just wish Cathy would just take a dose of valium, a shot of bourbon and just chill out. Neurotic/insecure women in this country are one reason why the birthrate is down. Chill out, take a load off your feet, have a bubblebath, mellow it baby—-once you get rid of some stress you might actually have a decent relationship.

Why would anyone spend $130.00 on a pair of boots . . . and ones they freely admit they didn’t even need at that? That’s just crazy talk! Oh, wait. This IS Cathy we’re talking about so never mind. My question just turned itself into a rhetorical one that need not be answered because it answers itself. How she can compare the amount of money she spent versus the amount that Irving will be spending when it comes to this date would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad and pitiful. lightenup is right: whether this date goes well or not, at least Cathy can wear her over-priced boots again and again until she wears them out but Irving’s money will be gone forever with nothing as tangible to show for it as she has . . . just an intangible memory of dinner and a play [so hopefully everything DOES go well tonight!]. ;-)
