Hey, GretchensMom, we miss you over at Calvin and Hobbes. The political extremism only went on for one day, so it’s safe to return now. On days like that, I just skim over the comments by first looking at the name of the poster. Then with most posters, as soon as I see any one word that is political, I move on to the next posting, and all of the rancor doesn’t ruin my day. But I did read your response because I looked at your name first.Of course, Omnius continues to post exactly the same political comment every day, and it has gone on so long now that I have begun to find it humorous, like we are all on Candid Camera or something like that. So, in a strange way, I now enjoy the fact that his totally predictable comment appears every day and I enjoy some of the very clever responses that people have begun to write to him. (For example: “Hey Omnius, next time you have a thought…… just let it go.”) But I don’t actually read his comments any more, and I stay away from responding to him, since I feel it is best to ignore him. I also feel very sorry for him.I think a site like Calvin and Hobbes is a good place to gradually learn how not to let other people’s extremism affect you, by getting a little dose of practice every day. It’s also a good place to practice keeping things in perspective. For example, Rogue disappeared 8 months ago and hasn’t returned, so how bad can any current discussion be?Have a good Mother’s Day.

Let it go, legaleagle. Yes, Triviaguy doesn’t know about Susan’s background and neither do you. You only know one side of the story and a vague one at that. It’s none of our business what happened in her childhood, so leave it alone. As many others have stated, there are many people who have had horrendous childhoods and parents, yet few of us feel the need to be so in-your-face about it here. Yes, sure, she’s bitter about her mother, but there’s no need for her to take it out on the rest of us. So if some of us feel the need to say something back, that’s fine. I ignore a lot of comments on other comics, but if there is something on Cathy that I don’t like, I WILL speak up.

This is one area where I don’t get Cathy even a little bit. I want to eat what I want to eat, and my mother in no way impacts that!

Well, O-Kay, it has to do with being co-dependent, which is a mental desease passed down in famiies. I also had a bad mother and ended up co-depedent, so I can really relate to Cathy. To each his own and Happy Mother’s Day! I found a replacement mother so I can still celebrate.

In afterthought, co-depence is not a desease. It’s a condition.

Focusing on the comic here (while trying to keep our forum civil for Mothers’ Day) …

Ow—I think my head exploded from that [eye-roll]. Medicine, anyone?

HI, MOM. Happy Sunday, “Cathy” Clan.

Hobbes (hope you see this!): Thank you for the encouragement. I really miss it over there at “C&H”. I still go there to read the comic and anything YOU have to say every day; everyone else I just scroll right on past. That political drivel just drives me up the wall! If it were only Omnius doing it, it wouldn’t be so terribly bad — I ignored or, if the comments were particularly nasty, I flagged them (for all the good it ever did!). But that last day when everyone else started doing it too, that’s when I had finally had enough. But because you’ve asked me to reconsider coming back, I’ll give it some thought. However, after the big, dramatic way I left, don’t you think I’d lose all “credibility” with that group if I then turned around and came back???

B/t/w: Yes, I’ve noticed that Rogue has been gone for quite some time now and how peaceful in that regard it’s been there ever since. Has it really been 8 months though? Now if only Omnius would do the exact same thing, life on “C&H” would be pretty good again!!!!!

Oh well, Happy Mother’s Day to all those who want to celebrate. I got a nice card from the 4 furry kids today and went to a very nice brunch. I put some flowers in a little area I have set aside for remembering my parents (the cemetery is abysmal and tends to run over anything we put out with a truck, so we gave up there). All in all quite pleasant.

I never got to know my birth mother very well before she died but, my stepmother was a b’tch. I really could have done without her. My mother- in- law was heaven sent. Sadly, much too soon, she returned to heaven. Miss you, Mum.

A very late Happy Mothers’ Day to all mothers (good or bad). I never did like the specific holiday idea either – selecting appropriate cards and gifts was never as skill I had. But I did by the mother of my children a couple of gifts this year – surprised her since I have not done that for a couple of years. Just wish my mother was still alive – she has been gone for over 20 years now and I still miss her – even if it is not Mothers’ Day. To those who do not agree with the sentiments expressed in this message – please ignore them. The comments have been a little less than civil for the past couple of days.

Hi, GretchensMom. I find that as each year goes by, extreme opinions bother me less. This is partly because I have now pretty much heard it all, and partly because I have made a conscious decision to become more and more of an observer of human nature over the years rather than one who is adversely affected by it. It’s very hard for political extremists to get under your skin if you focus on not letting them do so, and if you focus on far better things in life at the same time. When you said that you were “done,” I wasn’t sure whether you were done at Calvin and Hobbes for the day, the week, or for all of eternity. :>) So you still have some leeway if you want to return, since your dramatic exit was sufficiently vague. :>) Besides, if you return and then someone thinks you contradicted yourself, what are they going to do – come over to your house and tell you off to your face? Nobody even knows where you live. :>)If you think that you can enjoy returning and maybe even enjoy practicing not letting the trolls bother you, then I would encourage you to do so.If I had allowed Rogue to get under my skin the way that he wanted to, I would have stopped posting on Calvin and Hobbes long ago. But at the time, I looked at it as doing something positive for other people that they appreciated, even if I had to put up with some garbage from one antagonist who had a serious problem. Similarly, your ongoing positive comments are a big help to the other posters by creating a positive atmosphere, even if you have to put up with some political extremism from time to time. One good thing about Calvin and Hobbes is that, when a discussion gets totally out of hand, it usually ends at the end of the day, and the next day people are on to a different topic. This can be more of a problem if there is a series, but most of Calvin and Hobbes does not involve series, just standalone strips with a different topic each day.By the way, I expect to be gone for the next week or so, as my schedule forces me to come and go periodically.— Hobbes

No, I NEVER said or implied that an abused child deserves what he or she gets, but if you want to DELIBERATELY misinterpret what I said, that’s your problem! I do think it’s terrible when anyone is abused, but when you take it out on others and expect everyone to suffer for what you’ve been through, that’s bad also. See the latest news of Arial Castro as an example of someone who says he was abused (it is not confirmed, so don’t misinterpret that I don’t believe that you or Susan were abused) yet he never dealt with it and took it out on others. Not everyone needs to celebrate mothers, but why be rude to them deliberately? Heck, your response doesn’t even deserve a response because you are purposely putting incorrect words in my mouth, but I at least want to clarify that what you think I’m saying is totally WRONG and as usual you want to bully others into a fight. I usually ignore your comments, but today need to respond.
