Oh, I can think of a few things, but Betty does seem happy with her gift.

Beats the hell out of a carpet shampooer, and she IS taking it in the proper (non-clichéd) spirit.

It’s a good thing he knows his wife (yet another reason I love this comic, because of the strong marital relationship).

At least it doesn’t have an electric cord on it.

He got her what he knows she has really wanted but didn’t feel she could get. Perfect.

She does seem to like it. But if she didn’t, she had better like it anyway because it showed he listened to her. I grew up in a home where mom would talk about needing things like faucets and toilet seats before Christmas. Needless to say, that’s what she got. She was not happy. From that I learned that unless you really want a household appliance or new hardware for Christmas or your birthday, don’t talk about it. Guys seem to be hardwired for ‘practical’ gifts and that’s what they remember.

Which is better a practical inexpensive gift that she wants and will use, or an expensive useless gift?

Reminds me of the time I gave my wife a vacuum cleaner for Christmas — because she asked for it. Her sister thought I was nuts to give it to her, until she turned on her sister and exclaimed that she had asked for it — at which point her sister turned on her and said she was nuts.

I am one of those women. I can’t justify, to myself, spending the amount of money on some of the things I want. 4 years ago it was a rug doctor, 3 years ago it was a Dyson vacuum. My all time favorite gift was my very own tool bag that I can hide and have tools any time I need them. That one took about 15 years to arrive.
