The right was for the militias to be ready to protect the federal government FROM enemies both within and without. Today that function is fulfilled by the various state National Guard units, who are rightfully issued military style weapons.

But, private citizens were never meant to have such weaponry. This does not mean that you can not own legitimate hand guns, rifles, and shot guns that are non military in nature. Nobody (including your hated liberals) is saying that you can not own such non military style weapons.

That right was NEVER meant to help you in a violent revolt against the federal government as some of the more vehement ultra conservatives are saying.

And when President Obama takes the oath of office today he is pledging to take Abraham Lincoln’s same position on this and protect the federal government from revolutionary terrorists, both within and without the federal government!!

The guy who used to own the company I worked for is a survivalist. He has the 4foot by 10foot gun safe, freeze dried food, 4 wheel drive vehicle, and more. Better hair, though.

I think portraying Uncle Sam this way is a little off. It implies that gun zealotry is a mainstream position. It’s not. It’s a fringe issue with LOTS of dollars behind it, giving it disproportionate media coverage.

Hey all of you gun runner types that want to use the 2nd amendment to justify anyone owning any kind of weapon. Just where do we draw the line?

How about fully automatic machine guns? Or grenades and C4 explosives? How about rocket launchers, or even the weapon of choice for the Middle Eastern terrorists in the all purpose IED?

But I will have to admit that I really do grow tired of trying to be reasonable with the ultra conservative types on these boards, your minds are totally closed to any type of reasonable compromise under any circumstances.

So, while I have far more constructive things to do that to even begin to argue with you (things such as sleeping, and playing WOW), you will not be hearing form me anymore.

So, you have actually won, enjoy the fruits of your victory (at least until the next mass killing at any rate)!!

The guns and bars are the result of irrational fears generated by the same folks who prey upon the most ignorant in the population. The Republican Party has had only one thing to sell since Reagan: FEAR! (and phony economics was part of that package)

Does the U.S. have “dangerous neighborhoods”? Yes, indeed, and the reason: too many in those neighborhoods HAVE GUNS!!!! A better regulation environment, well enforced, would do a lot more good than bars on the windows, or military weapons for “defense”.

I have guns, in a gun safe, and rarely lock my doors. We have a minimum security prison less than a mile as the crow flies, or deer run, from our house. I’m a lot more cautious, and yes do “carry” when in the “big city” where shootings are common, and gun regulation doesn’t exist in reality, thanks to the NRA

Your 2nd requires guns for a well regulated militia, and the constitution spells out that the federal government has the power to call up that militia. Which, of course, was a common practice up through the Civil War. Hope you’re ready to be called up.

It’s not Morin – it’s you. Morin has been drawing Editorial cartoons longer than you’ve been posting. His subjects include whatever’s loudest in the news (in this case, the gun control issue) and he presents it in a way that everyone understands.Besides that, have you ever lived in Miami? There’s enough crime there to warrant the bars, for they keep the criminals out..P.S: The Miami Herald is published in Florida, not Ohio.

They are two entirely different subjects. I and other more moderate liberals (and I have even been a moderate conservative on occasion) fully support the average Americans right to own normal firearms. But that does not mean the right to own ANY kind of firearm, such as high capacity assault weapons, or explosives for that matter either. I do wish that you and the other ultra conservatives here would stop putting things into others posts that are not there.

Have you even fired such military style weapons? I have, and believe me such weaponry is a total danger to those that do not have the proper training to handle such weaponry. And to their families, and their neighbors, and their neighbors families.

I would be perfectly happy with gun clubs and ranges designed to allow people that want to blast away with such weapons (and can afford the fantastic cost of the ammo) to blast away to their little hearts content. Heck, they could even blast away with fully automatic weapons if that is their wish. Just as long as they can not take such weaponry home with them!

By the way, I believe that such gun clubs and ranges already exist. You can probably find such agencies on the internet if you look for them. Then please go and have all the fun you wish and can afford to. But only trained police tactical squads, Army Reserve units, and National Guard Units (and of course our own military itself) should have such weaponry out in the public, even then there is always the danger of collateral damage, even with fully trained people!

Tigger: in the past, in combat, I have shot people. In law enforcement, never did, because I used alternative means. In a dangerous, gun-filled neighborhood in a city with multiple shootings on a regular basis, I yes, am “prepared”.

But, dear Tigger: if you are going to continue to use quotation marks in reference to the Second Amendment, would you be so kind as to please READ IT! It is “keep and bear arms”, the word “own” isn’t in the amendment, just as the word “God” appears nowhere in the Constitution.

Robert Landers: during the 1965 riots, I went to Watts to check on my great uncle (Mom’s uncle), and found his black neighbors sitting in his front yard, one “sweet old lady” with a 12 gauge across her lap. She stated two critical things, first, I didn’t need to worry about my white elderly relative, because THEY would keep him safe. The second critical factor was that she pointed out the rioters were NOT FROM WATTS, but rather were “outsiders” come to pillage and destroy. The entire group watching out for my uncle also used the “N word” repeatedly in describing those invaders, and all were furious.

The “second Watts riot” post Rodney King decision, was likewise, “outsiders”, which is true of most riots I’ve had experience with in Yosemite, Baltimore, and elsewhere (military and civilian times “called to duty”).
