What’s wrong with calculus? People need to be able to integrate it.

Sure Phil looks different, got to lose the Nancy-Sluggo gene pool features and get some Fritzi DNA working if they are to become a couple.

Look at the November 27, 2012 strip. It’s a different guy. He’s been morphing ever since then.

Some of Fritzi’s kisses must have turned him into a man.

Calculus was my worst subject to comprehend in Engineering school.By the time I retired, used Calculus only once – and that was on a home project that could have been graphed just as easily!

Calculus is in a regular progression of math, beginning with arithmetic.In each step, one has to come up with more and more answers with less and less givens.

Ditto exturk except I never used calculus for anything after school.

I was wondering if one of the reasons why Phil Fumble was drawn as a shorter guy was because Phil’s on-going relationship with Fritzi sort of moved into the forefront about 1938 – and, a few years later, most of the available men would have been overseas, shooting at bad guys – except for those whom the Army felt were either involved in important “essential” jobs or who were not considered to be “perfect” specimens – often because they needed to wear glasses, or were considered too short or too tall. I had an uncle who signed up for the Army PRIOR to the U.S. involvement in World War ii. However, he had to apply THREE times before they would accept him. Primarily because they thought he was too short. Plus, he was a whiz at mechanics and I guess, at that point, the government considered being an auto mechanic as an “essential” job. When he was finally accepted, he was trained to use Radar – which, at that time, was considered “top secret.” So he wasn’t allowed to talk about his work until LONG after the war!

I don’t consider the romance budding between Fritzi and Phil as anything new. Still from the 40s, I remember Phil deciding one day that it was time for him to propose to Fritzi. So he kept trying to take her to some romantic spot so he could propose. But, every time he was on the verge of proposing, someone would turn up and spoil the mood. So Phil finally took Fritzi out in the country for a picnic. However, as they were setting up, a whole bunch of plane began dropping paratroopers out of the sky – the paratroopers were recruits who were learning how to jump out of planes before being deployed overseas!

In another Frizi and Phil story I remember, Fritzi fell asleep in her easy chair by the window and dreamed that Phil came in, went down on one knee and asked her to marry him, promising that he was willing to “lay the world at her feet.” When she woke up, Fritzi wondered if her dream of Phil asking her to marry him would ever come true. At that moment, Phil arrived and, as he walked across the room, he tripped on a throw rug and landed on one knee. In the meantime, he had also knocked a globe off of its stand, and the globe rolled over by Fritzi’s feet!

In another of the Fritzi stories which I remember from the 40s – Fritzi decided to have all of her friends over for a dance. So she rolled up her rug and took it into another room. (In those days, NO ONE had even heard of “wall-to-wall” carpeting!) After Fritzi removed the rug, she spent the rest of the day, mopping and waxing the floor so it would be suitable for dancing. However, when Fritzi’s friends began to arrive, Phil announced to everyone that the “big game” was being broadcast on the RADIO! So all of the men gathered around the radio to listen to the game, and the women all sat on the couch because they were all dressed up and ready to dance – but all of their dance partners were huddled around the radio!

I was once offered a week-long substitute teaching job, but it was rescinded because It included teaching trigonometry, which I hadn’t taken in college. Nope. All the math I had in college was calculus!

So, maybe calculus was required just to hone the thinking skills?
