The cartoon expresses the fear of many gun owners. Mr. LaPierre, no matter what you think of his opinion and/or organization, is guilty of no crimes and the image of a law abiding gun owner being arrested for owning a gun or expressing an opinion in support of gun ownership feeds the extreme partisans who believe they need to have some of the guns being discussed to protect themselves from law enforcement and, according to some, the military itself. The cartoon isn’t helpful and feeds extremists on both sides of the argument, making it hard for people to talk about compromise.Respectfully,C.

The NRA is guilty of promoting and allowing weapons of mass killing to proliferate in America. It also is guilty of outlawing any government study of gun deaths, since it knows that no good can come from factual knowledge on this topic (made clear by the radical posters on this site). The NRA spends a lot more of its time helping gun manufacturers than gun owners.

The “cop” has a hat that says gun control, not ban all guns.Control is a responsible premise that seems to find a lot of push back from the spokesmen of the NRA.

The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to keep him from getting a gun. The NRA is becoming more of an embarrassment every single day. They really degrade America. We have to allow them to exist, like the KKK, but like the Klan, as a nation, we are ashamed.

Look at the first quotation listed on this site (from Thomas Jefferson):Government Tyranny.Additionally, he said: “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

La PIerre is simply a very highly paid lobbyist, and nut. The NRA does have some fairly sane members, still, they they haven’t been in the leadership of the organization for a long time.

BTW,my nephew has a legal Uzi, and Mac 11 that are perfectly legal. He only finds them “entertaining” to fire on the range, and would never use one of them off a range. He bought and licensed them for a simple reason, their value has increased every year from 50% to 200%!! The new debate is sending their “value” skyrocketing. (yes they’re pre-’86 manufacture, part of the"legality")

In our conversation today he also reiterated what I’ve said for decades: the best “home defense” weapon is a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Just “rack” a round, and any “bad guy” in your vicinity will depart with alacrity!

I wonder how many of America’s youth have to be slaughtered before the gun obsessed support some common sense gun regulations, such as a ban on military assault-type guns and high capacity clips. .Is this not enough?Virginia Tech. University – 32 dead 17 injuredSandy Hook Elementary – 27 deadUniversity of Texas – 16 dead, 31 injuredColumbine High School – 13 dead, 27 injuredHigh School on Red Lake Indian Reserve – 9 deadCalifornia State – 7 dead, 2 injuredOikos University, Oakland – 7 deadWest Nickel Mines School, Pa – 5 Amish girls dead, 5 injuredCleveland Elementary School, Stockton, Ca – 5 dead, 30 injuredRose-Mar College of Beauty, Mesa, Az – 5 dead.Values and priorities are way out of whack with many, and pointing to the 2nd Amendment for justification of non-regulation is for fools.

I’ve not seen anyone point out the fact David Michael Keene, the son of the President of the NRA, is in prison for a road rage shooting?I wonder why his father didn’t make sure his son, who had a history of mental problems, didn’t have access to a gun?

It’s pretty much like any other national organisation. There are good people and some bad ones. AFAIK, Lanza was not a member. I don’t hate America but I do wish people would think straight. Emotional outbursts about rights and such do not help us find a solution to the problem we face. Personally, I think LaPierre is a crackpot and I’m not keen on Keane either. What’s been said on TV by both of these people make rational people worry. Armed guards at schools likely won’t stop a shooter and may add to the crossfire, assuming they don’t get plugged without firing a shot. It took the US military some time to react to the Japanese attacking Pearl because no one expected it. We didn’t expect anyone to hijack aircraft and fly them into buildings either in 2001.We also have to reconsider how we handle the emotionally disturbed. I’m not overly enthusiastic about everyone who’s ‘weird’ being closely watched as many harmless people are unusual. It’s a tough problem and letting our emotions cloud our judgement won’t make for a good solution.

“…….Your opinions may be welcome and operative in your Home Country…….Not so much in America…..”.An American whining about a foreigner interfering in her internal affairs – that’s a good one!.(You thunk maybe I might want to feel safe when I live and travel in the States?)

Uncle JOe: your post certainly summarizes why Keene, and for that matter La Pierre, aren’t too interested in seeing background checks intensified??

BTW, while a number of DSM II or IV diagnoses should be suspedt, and V wll modify them more, not every diagnosable mental problem is a sign toward violent behavior, in fact ,, a number indicate the opposite. So no, even with a few cases, not good to “jump the gun”.

“…….Stay away from school with Gun Free Zones signs and you will be OK……..Welcome, bring money, Obama need it…….”.Thanks, I will take your advice and stay away from high-risk school zones. I presume that would also apply to Day Cares and nurseries..With all this violence south of the border, I’m starting to worry that GypsyWagon’s licence plate broadcasts “UNARMED”. Probably I should just stay home.

The second comment is correct. All I see here is a government goon and I don’t even own a gun. I do, however, agree with a constitutional right to own and carry a gun. Too bad the courts began to tear down mental health facilities in the 1960s so there is now little or no early intervention with obviously mentally disturbed people that are responsible for every armed rampage. If they are determined to kill, they will find a way to do it.

Yes, the NRA does indeed run a number of gun-safety courses. (Can’t vouch for the quality, but I know that they’re offered on-line and through a lot of gun shops and police departments.)

If the NRA membership were smart, they’d demand that the leadership cut the lobbying arm loose (let the gun manufacturers and sellers fund their own lobbying efforts rather than using membership dues to subsidize them! And if LaPierre doesn’t like it, cut him loose too!) and put the emphasis back on safety and training.

LaPierre’s crime is being a shill for gun manufacturers, though, it’s still not a prosecutable offense. But, it is a cartoon.

With the NRA’s help, one cannot legally shout fire in a crowded theater if there is no fire but one can legally bring in a gun, thereby putting every single other person in there in fear that you’re going to fire away. This is not reasonable. There are limits on the first amendment and the second as well.

If only Chattanooga had stopped that gun-toting law-abiding good guy Mohammad Abdulazeez before he just went a little funny in the head and began shooting people. He was diagnosed with manic depressive/bipolar disorder, for which he had sought treatment with a psychiatrist, and he used drugs. His parents asked him to give up drugs and seek substance abuse treatment, but he refused, as was his right, just like his our your right to keep and bear arms in the USA, no matter how mentally unstable you may be.
