Was it any more than Cheney’s Halliburton was given in no-bid government contracts or the missing money they “lost” and can’t account for?

I agree with Bruce, C Downs, mickey and ReasonsVentriloquist, but don’t see how we can combine all of these rational thoughts into a solution that has a chance of success.*Yes, as large as it is, our debt is seen by many as being reasonably secure*Yes, our “downgrade” was and still is due to our willingness to pay, not our ability.*Yes, our politicians live in a bubble where life is good for them, and they don’t need to live with the same concerns that we do (healthcare, retirement, public schools). *And yes, we are now even more divisive than we were during the Viet Nam era.*The only way to substantially change things is to elect people to the House and Senate that want to change things. But candidates that truly want to end business as usual are not likely to raise the money necessary to even get on the debate stage with the other candidates, so few of us will ever hear their views. I wish I had an actionable solution.

“And your post has what to do with the comic?”It’s a response to Ima’s comment.“Jase, Dude, you keep coming up with the “reason” that it is OK is because a republican did it.”I should have been more clear. My comment was in response to Ima’s comment, which in itself is part of the larger phony concern about spending and debt. It’s little more than a political ploy that will go away the moment another Republican is elected into the White House. Republicans acted very concerned about deficit spending during the Clinton administration, but stopped caring for the duration of the Bush Administration. They started “caring” again the moment Obama took office. I wasn’t excusing the Democrats on the basis of “the Republicans did it first,” I was pointing out Ima’s comment and the Republican “concern” about deficit spending as political BS.

The only nation with a debt ceiling. One more thing to add to the reasons we’re in decline.
