Good morning, Vagabonds. Nice to see you first again, Slim. What’s “morning” to everyone on the east coast is night time to you, so good night.
That stint at the IRS still left me tired with muscle ache yesterday. At least I’m copying my VHS tapes. Slowly tboxes are emptying of the tapes. I’ve watched “Zorro,” with Ricardo Montalban and an Azerbaijan movie. I think I’m copying “Henry V” right now.
Morning, Village.Little bit of a set-back. When the fridge arrived, it wouldn’t fit into the space I had built for it. I left a space 36 inches wide and the fridge measures 35 and a half. It should have fit, but we found out even though it measures 35 and a half inches, it bulges out on the sides. Rather than send it back I kept it and said that I’ll make it work. So I removed the sheetrock on the wall of the cubbyhole where the fridge goes and today I’m going to buy a sheet of quarter inch sheetrock to replace it with. Getting that extra quarter inch should be all I need.
Good morning gang..Well Slim, I see your blizzard on the news, pictures of cactus covered with snow. A golf tournament was called on acount of snow. (oy)Reminds me of the Feseta Bowl one New Years, snow so thick you could not see the field, snow in Elpaso TX. (oy again). Now snow here dosn’t even raise an eyebrow..Arye: I remember “Zorro” with Guy Williams, but not Ricardo Montalban, but there are many movies I know nothing about..Ok, this movie star has played an Astronaut, a Knight with a Dragon for a best friend, stranded on an asteroid with the enemy, and he’s now a cowboy sheriff out west. Who am I talking about?.Have fun..ttfn
@dkram: It was too late for me to comment on the refrigerator that you talked about. That was the first one my parents had. It was called “The GE Monitor.” The model before that did not have the cooling fins enclosed. There was no shield around the outside edge. It had four legs to support it and what passed for a freezer. A small compartment with a door that only held about four ice cube trays. About the only frozen items at the time was ice cream until Clarence Birdseye came along with his method of flash freezing food.
Dkram: I am a big fan of Dennis Quaid. His dragon friend Drago was voiced by Sean Connery, another of my favorites.
Quaid’s performance as Ralph Lamb, the sheriff of Las Vegas is very enjoyable. When I read that the series was coming, I did some research on Ralph Lamb and what he accomplished for Las Vegas, and he was quite a guy. He created what is now known as the Las Vegas Metro Police Department that is still headed by the sheriff rather than a police chief. (CSI gets that part right, even if they do drop the “Metro” part of the name.) He started the modern forensic crime lab. And he required (and enforced) all known “gangsters” to register with the sheriff’s office when they came into town. The only thing I don’t like about the show is that they really aren’t following history. It is set in 1961, yet the entire focus of the show is downtown with vague hints of things getting started on Las Vegas Blvd., way South of town. The first resort/casino on the strip was built in 1948 and by 1961 there were several while downtown was deteriorating rapidly. The other thing is that the mobs had a sort of gentleman’s agreement that there was no violence in Las Vegas. They knew that their money was coming from the tourist trade and that tourists didn’t want to go where they might get shot in the crossfire. That’s why Bugsy Seigel was shot in Hollywood. He didn’t leave Las Vegas for a long time because he knew he was vulnerable elsewhere. (Source: When the Mob Ran Las Vegas by Steve Fischer – an excellent read if you like that sort of thing.) On the show there is someone getting killed through mob activity almost every week. My husband says it is for dramatic effect and I suppose he’s right, but that doesn’t reduce my irritation.
Wow……I had no clue about your Quiz, dkram. Thanks for the help, Jan. Never knew about the ban on mob activity in Vegas. Great idea, though……tourists wouldn’t come if there were shootings everywhere. When our kids were small, and we would go camping up in Yellowstone, we would leave home about 3 a.m. and drive through the night because we had no air conditioning in our van. We would always stop somewhere on the strip for one of those 79 cent breakfast buffets. Of course, those hotels are all gone now, but, then, in the 60’s Vegas was still a small town.
Speaking of LV, it’s all over the National News today on TVwith one mob gang & another having Shoot out……………fancy cars involved also- somebody, somebodyssss don’tlike some other somebodyssss
Dennis Quaid is indeed the actor I was asking about..IMDb has all his work to date as it has for all performers in the movies and TV.He is quite the performer, but, I feel L. Gordon Cooper, one of the Mercury Seven was one of his best..Jan, thanks for the info on Sheriff Lamb, I had heard it was based (that’s based) on true events..ttfn
QUESTION: About a week ago a couple folks here mentioned a trivia site (perhaps dkram? or JanCinLV?) I can’t find the reference…could someone please give the address of this site again. Thanks.
ARTISTIC LICENSE? CSI Miami was set in Miami, Fla., but mostly filmed in California (when you live in So. Fla., you notice when the scenes are really shot elsewhere). And there was an old cable show Silk Stalkings that was supposed to be set in the Palm Beach, Fla. area, but was also filmed in Calif. & showed a lot of hills and mountains (which don’t exist here). And now a new cable tv show titled Graceland, supposedly set in Calif., is filming in the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. area. Go figure!
The only thing I can remember is mentioning looking up movies and actors on IMDb. They usually have some trivia you can’t find anywhere else. Or maybe wiki, although I wouldn’t trust everything they have to say.
Artistic License: I know that’s what happens and my husband laughs at me because I get so irritated with it. There was an article this morning about how much artistic license was used in “Lincoln”, “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Argo”. It happens all the time to enhance the story for film, and honestly we don’t go to such movies to see a documentary. That doesn’t mean I have to like it.
