This says a lot about human nature. Not just on the part of Jeff, but Joanie as well. She assumes because she laid down the law and meant it, that Jeff is complying. Of course, if she did check on him, he might complain that she doesn’t trust him,. Trust has become something we demand without giving consideration to earning it.

No points for GT as an interior decorator— the kitchen looks pretty spartan.

Jeff is 30 years old, broke, just having come off a bad investment in a new Porsche being repossessed and a new mega-estate the size of one belonging to Tiger Woods gone into foreclosure. He’s destitute, but does have writing skills, having published a short-term best seller called RED RASCAL. He lives in his parents basement under special rules and conditions imposed by his mother Joanie.

He has now just broken those rules. There must be a determination of what happened by Joanie, before the final judgment can be reached — that he be “kicked to the curb” at age 30.

Besides, if Jeff straightens up and flies right, he could make plenty of money and reward his parents handsomely. Why should Joanie throw away their investment too soon?

Hope springs eternal.

I tried twice to move out and had to move back both times. Finally, my parents moved to Texas. That worked.

Zipper may have a new roommate. Then he won’t have to travel a great distance to see him.

It’s a sketch of a kitchen, which appears to have a nice natural brick wall. What surprises me is that, given how long Jeff’s lived there, they don’t have a finished basement.

Before this latest song by the Corrigan Brothers, there was their earlier 2008 version, just as fun as the new version.

well, for starters when i was 21 in new york city, my monthly rent was $44 for a 2 bedroom i shared with a roomie. same space is now about $2200.

If Trudeau leaves Joanie in character, then Joanie will not be surprised by the strip’s punchline — that Jeff lies abed when he’s agreed, by verbal “social contract” with his mum, to be working at writing from nine till noon.

Today’s punchline will automatically serve as setup for a future punchline in which her underlying wisdom and knowledge of human nature is revealed in a gently humorous way.

Queen Christina of Sweden didn’t let Descartes get away with lying in bed all morning. She made him get up early in the morning to discuss philosophy with her. Not surprisingly, he died of pneumonia after a few months in Sweden. So Joanie should be careful. She may be endangering Jeff’s health with her rules.

Joanie speaks three times in this strip.

Panel 1: “That’s the deal . . . .”Panel 2: “If he wants to live at home, he has to put in three solid hours of writing every morning!”Panel 3: “He does.”

Joanie is reminded of nothing, is mostly likely already well aware of Jeff’s sleeping in, and probably already has plans for how to deal with it.

Late arrival here…As to the comparative decor of the kitchen and the basement, the first thing I noticed was that both rooms have documents taped to vertical surfaces. Joanie, momlike, has hers on the fridge, while Jeff has his on the wall next to the furnace. Unless, of course, that’s the furnace manual and warranty hanging there….

I was wondering about that. She needs one of those video monitoring cameras like they have for babies down there.

Re “hard work”

Both commenters and lurkers here are literate, intelligent, and perfectly capable of making up their own minds.

Stand in awe at the amount of energy and time it takes to cover up nothing.

Sorry can’t agree. The best thing would have been for the parent to realize their responsibility and start teaching you to be independent before elementary school. And in school encourage and help you develop into self sufficiency and teach you how to take care of yourself. I have seen all to often just kicking them to the curb fails both parent and child miserably because the parent thinks that’s ALL they have to do.

Ya think? It’s pretty sad when even Zipper is smarter than Joanie.

She knows her son. Didn’t she think to check on Jeff – at least once in a while, randomly, to keep him on his toes?
