still amazes me on how fast teens can text on their phones. but, then again, typing class is mandatory in many schools. and, it starts early (elementary/primary school). and, some schools even offer classes to create an app.

A former neighbor who sat in front of a computer at work waiting for a crisis learned how to type http//www. really fast and I see how relevant that is now.

That would be more typos for me. I don’t remember where the letters are and my vision is poor, even with contacts and reading glasses. But 35 years after typing class, my fingers know where to go, and quickly too.

The number of people posting on the internet is no where near infinite, is in fact a unnoticeable speck compared to infinity. Therefore nothing about this premise has been proven or unproven.

I’m a touch-typist, and these days prefer one of those ergonomic “split” keyboards. I’m pretty fast. On different keyboards (particularly small laptops) I slow down a bit.

For some reason recently I had to use a real electric typewriter, an IBM Selectric. I started, tap, tap,tap --z-z-zoom! Wow, what a distinct tactile feel! I loved that keyboard! Kind of awkward to hitch it to a USB port, though.

History:In the 1880’s Remington, the rifle people, needed a new line of business. They decided to start manufacturing those newfangled “type-writing machines” (“typewriter” originally meant the person, not the machine; same for “computer”.)

But the early machines were klunky and jammed too easily when users began to get speedy with practice. Remington decided to shuffle the keyboard to slow people down. Thus was QWERTY invented. In addition, they held a publicity contest to find the longest word that could be typed using only the top row of letters. It’s not a coincidence the word was “typewriter”.
