Getting a little ahead of himself, isn’t he?

But still, that’s a valid point he’s raising. To quote director George Miller of the Mad Max franchise…

“It’s four-dimensional storytelling. A game can literally become the equivalent of a novel. That is the thing that people like me who write screenplays envy about novelists: that you can actually stop time and explore little cul-de-sacs. Whereas in a movie, you’d love to stop and examine that character, but you can’t.”

Video games have moved up in the world to something bigger than just games. They can even be considered an academic discipline. In fact, Oxford invited me to speak on this point.

Very few games come anywhere close to having as good a story as the movie — let alone the book. Games may have more time to develop characterizations than a movie, but few make good use of that. And part of the reason for that is that people play games for different reasons than that they watch movies and read books. Why spend extra time and developmental resources on something they think most of the players won’t notice or appreciate?

Hey, at least it’s not the movie based upon the video game.
