In 1941 Gould had Mole say “Mole is following the newspapers” , difficult to do if you can`t read. And if I recall, in 1971 Mole read on a newspaper about his park lair blown up. How come he’s an illiterate here?

hmm…lowery’s restaurant…another name dropped, perhaps? if i recall correctly, there was someone with that name connected with a theatrical serial back in the early 40’s….

I’m sure it’s a play on Lawry’s.

Hi Ashmael,The Mole has been retconned. Gould also depicted him (at various times) as a cold-blooded murderer, withered with age, and pathetically crippled with arthritis. All of this has been forgotten. (Gould himself chose to forget that the Mole was a murderer.)

In panel 2, Mole is not talking to anyone. He’s not covering for illiteracy, he’s just saying he cant make out what it says, and needs Toad’s help. His eyes may actually be going bad. This would be consistent with being able to read in years past.

Moles have very poor eyesight. Some species are almost completely blind.

I’m thinking Tracy deliberately arranged for “family” to cover all the people living in Mole’s little underground city. It’s a grand gesture and will make some happiness for many folks in need.

Lowery was also the name of one of The Sentinal newpaper’s ace reporters in The Green Hornet radio series of the 30’s-50’s.

I really like this week’s strips with Mole and “Toad Hall.”

Maybe it’s a case of comic strip paranoia, but I have to wonder if this is foreshadowing to something bad about to happen to Mole and his “family.”

There will be drama, wouldn’t be Dick Tracy without it. I suspect one of two things to happen. 1) Nothing-Mole takes his family to dinner, everyone’s happy. Yes, it has happened, a visit to an old friend and no dramatic storyline. 2) Trouble on the way to, at or when leaving the restaurant. @tsull2121Interred is correct term. It was, technically, a concentration camp.

Amazing how many of you have forgotten Bob Lowery who starred in the second Batman serial in 1949. Am sure this is a tribute to him and we keep the Batman ties going until The Penguin makes an appearance.

As far as whether the Japanese were in “internment” or “Concentration” camps; it can be said both: A Concentration camp is an internment camp where generally one group is concentrated in one place… Which is why most historians now call the Nazi concentration camps “Death Camps” now, as a way to differentiate

For those who wondered. Lowery’s is, in fact, a fictionalized version of Lawry’s – The Prime Rib. The chain started in the Los Angeles area, and has restuarants in Dallas, TX, and Las Vegas, NV, as well as several in Asia, where American-style beef is very popular. Its Chicago restaurant is one of its most successful..Lawry’s, as others have noted, specializes in prime rib. It’s simply the best prime rib there is. Period.,Lawry’s is also well-known for its special “seasoned salt” and “seasoned pepper,” available in stories all over the US..It’s not cheap, but, for what you get, it’s not really that expensive, either. Excellent food. Excellent service,. Excellent location. The worst meal I ever had there was splendid. The worst service I ever had there was superb.,It was my suggestion that we make the restaurant Lawry’s (there was talk, at one point, of using the real spelling, but it was decided to go with a fictionalized spelling)..Lawry’s has a special, sentimental attachment for me. My wife and I have had dinner there every Valentine’s Day since we started going together..On the second anniversay of our first date, I proposed to Katy at Lawry’s..Nine months later, after exchanging vows at Assumption Church on Illinois and Orleans Streets in Chicago, we had our wedding reception in Lawry’s banquet room., Since then, birthdays, anniversaries, promotions to sergeant, and other special occasions have always been celebrated there..And, yes, the fictionalized spelling was partly a tip of the hat to an actor who once portrayed a certain square-jawed caped crusader in the movies..Coming so soon on the heels of the Broadway Bates story, it seemed appropriate.

awww, isn’t it nice that Dick Tracy gave Mole a gift certificate a late Christmas gift for him and his family to Lowery’s Restaurant?…does anyone know if Lawry’s Restaurants are still open?

…….to me, it appears after learning Toads mother is widowed, and seeing how he cares for Toad, he simply “regifted” a dinner certificate meant for him…..hard to see Tracy being 15 days late with something. In fact, he may be trying to play matchmaker as well!

Going on 3 1/2 months since we last saw Moon Maid….just sayin.
