Because they do. Nobody ever even thinks of buying others a drink. Fairness is when each pays his/her dues, bar, reastaurant, movies, anywhere. Only in business relations and close family does one pay for the others. Otherwise it’s always separate billing. And no tips of course. Partly true in Belgium too. FYI

The United States was originally settled by people from the British Isles and then from Germany. In this context, Dutch is a corruption of the word “deutch”, which means German in the German language, and it implied a criticism of the German immigrants. Dutch treat came to mean no treat at all, and Dutch uncle meant someone who was more strict than loving. I believe there are more examples of this but cannot think of any at the moment.

The Dutch are people from the Netherlands, the expression to go Dutch applies to them. Not to the Germans. Even if it’s true that the word Dutch derives from Deutsch. There are similar sayings in latin languages, where Hollanders are not called by a name related to Deutsch…The people from Holland are like Scottish people, labeled as sitting on their money. It’s as true as the British self-control (been to a football match or rock concert recently?)..But they do like to pay THEIR dues, that’s all. Not yours.
