It’s not compulsory, but in the UK a lot of young girls get pregnant just for the Benefit and the chance of a Council House. Their mothers did the same.
Forty-something years ago, women in the armed services would have to leave due to pregnacies; “Pregnant soldiers” was an oxymoron. Sooo, if one wanted an early out, they simply had to “proposition” some Sad Sack, drunk or otherwise, and usually, unless they were “coyote ugly”, the male would certainly “help out” their comrade-in-arms. And, as abortions were becoming legal in several states, the situation could be “resolved” as soon as she left service.
Until one day, as one of these ladies was outprocessing, a JAG officer asked if she knew who the father was. She said that of course she did (after all, what kind of girl did they think she was), and he reminded her that she could get her “helper-outer” for child support for the rest of his life, if she wanted.
Apparently she “wanted”, and collected, and all of a sudden, the male soldiers were a lot less generous with their “help.”
