I need to accept a harsh and obscure religious code. Kind of sad, isn't it? Yeah, well there's some stuff I want to get out of at school, but I wanna be high-minded about it.

That paragraph is exactly the kind of phrasing that I’ve been looking for. I may steal that on occasion :)
Well said! I never understood why people believed in things they couldn’t explain. They don’t expect to get called on it.I was going to start my own personal religion when I worked. One that said I could not work on weekends or after dark. Then I got a day job and no weekends and now retired – so I’m religionless. (gee, spell checker doesn’t like that word).
My son’s high school was really multicultural. They also didn’t allow the kids to wear hats (The school board stupidly claimed wearing of a hat of any kind indicated membership in a “gang” ) The only kids allowed to wear heads were those whose religion required it (Sikhs, some Islam, some Jewish kids)My son and most of his friends were non-conformist art and drama geeks. They all enjoyed pushing the envelope, and often showed up wearing top hats, bowlers, jester’s hats, baker’s hats, whatever they could find, the more outlandish the better. Only one managed to keep his hat on all the time. Norman wore a plain black watchcap. He claimed he wore it for religious reasons. When asked which religion, he told the school board “I practice Normanism.” They let him wear his hat.

That ‘Sideshow Bob’ looking boy is my favourite out of Toby’s friends.
The other one is pretty cute too but he needs a haircut.
