Meanwhile, over at “9 Chickweed Lane”, a character is looking at the date 12/12/12 and trying to figure out which number is the day of the week. The answer, of course, is none of them.
to those people who believe in 12/21 and 12/12 and have been making a doomsday prep, what happens when it all becomes a normal day? or, it doesn’t have this year or next or in 5 years, or ever?
The problem with prophecy is: if the future is already written, and its fulfillment is inevitable- then does anything we do matter? Is free will a delusion? If everything leads to an end already foreseen, then are we making choices at all, or only acting out predetermined parts? How about the idea that an ancient civilization guesses at a possible end, based upon the way they see the world in their own time and through the lens of their own culture? It’s a guess.
Prophecy is always conditional. There can be certain “waypoints” along the way that are fixed, but anything that depends upon human action must be conditional upon said human(s) following a certain course of action.
In 2001 was 01/01/01, in 2002 was 02/02/02, in 2003 was 03/03/03, and so on until today 12/12/12… twelve years with particular numbered dates that will not happen again until the 22th century. And regarding the 21st and the Mayan thing, What you would like to happen on that date? like a massive (but harmless) meteor shower or special event, like UFO sighting, etc.
I love the idea that no one will see another repetitive date. (like 1/1/1) Apparently, we have no hope of a life expectances of more than the mid-90’s??? I mean, a 6 year old today could see another one.
Personally, I’m planning on living until I am 145, just to prove folks wrong. :)
they did have the wheel, wheeled artifiacts have been found. they made bronze alloys, impressive enough. And they did NOT have a doomsday legend for the ending of the “13th baktun”, their calendar just starts the 14th baktun on 12/21/12.
@RottiluvI agree. I’m surprised that for a year (or longer) everyone has been talking about and hyping up December 21st, and then all of the sudden we hit December and everyone randomly starts saying it’s 12/12 that’s the end of the world. I think it’s the whole “2012” that gets stuck in people’s minds, and confused them thinking its 12/12/12. Who knows? I think maybe that in and of itself is comical.
I actually love this comic and hate to comment with something like this, but sheesh…such a big speech from Roy (my favorite), only to be about the wrong day. A little disappointed.
I’m sure they’ve realized this by now and will comment on it soon enough.
I tried to couch it in simpler terms, but it’s the same idea. It even goes for a work of fiction. If an author leans too heavily on the idea that there is a prophecy being fulfilled, then can the characters be any more than game pieces acting out parts over which they have no control? Are they not accountable for their actions? Not responsible for their failures or their successes? The human mind likes to conceive prophecy and predestination, because it suggests an order to things. It eliminates randomness. I’m writing an epic fantasy, but I’m avoiding prophecies and ‘chosen ones.’
I thought about preparing for the end of the world. But if I were truly serious – then i would prepare for THE END OF THE WORLD! and already been living in an underground bunker with the appropriate “damation alley” road vehicle and supplies to last me and however many that join me for about 100 years. ….. That’s too pricey and too involved..Thinking of just going out for dinner or something similar on the 21st. Then play with the numbers 21-12-12 or is that 12-12-21 or for some… 12-21-12.

Australia will do a better future date – 21/12/2112 – nested palindromic numbers. :)
