this is what we get for indulging our children from birth, teaching them to expect tons of gifts under the tree on December 25.-Mammon has been chosen as Ruler by too many Americans.Parents have 12 months between holidays to save and plan for a modest Yule Season….and Parents should spend a lot of that season teaching the Bible record of the Birth of the Christ child, the reason God sent His Son, and the Atonement on the Cross that He came to do to save all humans who choose to put Faith in Him.

Orthodox Catholic, Disgusted Taxpayer, and I have a point of agreement. Money corrupts. While they focus on the religious values money, or more accurately, greed has corrupted, my focus over the last weeks have been on how the value of money exceeds the value of people and “real” things. Supercomputers with complicated algorithms juggle world currencies and make money of the rise and fall of a dollar’s value against the euro, pound, yen, etc. They make money from betting on money, but they produce nothing.No food is grown, no clothes are made, no homes or small businesses are built, but these “investors” make 7 or 9 digit incomes and too often, fail to spend enough of it on “real” things for the famous “trickle down” effect to take place.In the the Old Testament of the Bible, Moses speaks of forgiving all debts. For the Jews, debts were to be forgiven every 7 years. For everyone else, every 50 years. Moses called it the “Jubilee” The logic of this, religiously, is in how it keeps money from being more important than God or People. This financial reset freed indentured servants as well as restoring financial, if not material, equity between peoples.With all of the political and corporate mishandling of the national income over the last 200+ years, maybe a “Jubilee” could be a good thing. Release the auditors, Send forth the accountants, summon from their high towers the wizards of CPA and under the watchful eyes of state and federal regulators, clean the booksAs long as the USA produces food, coal, oil, and other things the world needs, we have the value that money is supposed to represent. After all, money is simply a hypothetical thing. In a civilized setting, money is how we exchange services without using guns and clubs to take what we need/want. When catastrophe strikes, the value of money drops incredibly compared to a case of clean bottles of water, or a dozen MREs. If food and water can’t be delivered to your area, and the days go by, you can have bricks of gold, but the person with the extra cans of food or the extra bottles of clean water become the rich ones. The people who know how to grow greens or harvest food from the wild or even hunt become much more important than number crunchers at an investment bank. The jubilee is probably not practical, but as long as the value of money exceeds the value of services people provide to people, our world and nation will continue to suffer from the evils committed in the name of money. and the power money gives.It’s an idealistic idea, but not a “bad” idea. Just impractical in the cannibalistic capitalism that is the US financial markets. Small businesses bought out and consumed and spit out by bigger companies. Wal mart opens, and main street in Anytown, USA starts closing.There ought to be a better way.Respectfully,C.
Phew, do I feel like the enemy here. I’m a retired accountant, part time stock trader, teacher and a few other handles. I love business, competition and the market structure. Responsibility for our current debt, market structure, income imbalance, and the myriad of other economic issues we face is our own fault. “C” summed it up in one word: GREED. Our latest debacle came on the heels of cheap credit that we readily abused, buying cheap goods from Asia, houses that we could flip and an economic environment that was libertine to say the least. History will show that we allowed it to get out of control. Of course this is a complex situation, people abused trust and responsibility, but the root cause of our problems are our own. When you add to the problems our growing government and the huge influence corporate America has exercised on Washington ( on both parties) it just accelerates and intensifies the problems. Our actions, values, principles, are exercised in a very basic principal: supply and demand and our capability to elect our leaders. When you don’t support a business trend it dies for lack of support. When elected leaders don’t honestly and realistically put your interests over politics and their own gains, dump them. When you insist on term limits, lobbying laws with teeth and an end to crony capitalism in Washington you change the system. It’s not a one time fix, it’s not one party ruling over another, this is a process that will take years. I "preach " this to students and encourage them to look for solutions to our current economic malaise. I never cease to be amazed and encouraged by their ideas, especially when they are devoid of political talking points. Any political talking points. They all know I am a Libertarian and regardless of their political leanings, often take the position of the devil’s advocate just to challenge their thinking. Debate is wonderful and challenging and often fosters new ideas. For the sake of the children I hope we can overcome this bitterness and contention that exists today. I may be beating a hollow drum, but seeing this environment continue can lead to nothing but our further economic and cultural demise. Thanks for letting me share…
