I did not know that about Unicorns. Also when I saw the 1st panel I was like “Oh know Marigold is dead!” the last panel reminds me of Red & Rover. I’ll have to stop by and see if any horse owners can shed light on Equestrian purring. Comments, there educational.

    More C&H ties. I guess she’s “growling friendly-like.”

As i go scrolling back up to get to the next comic I just saw Panel 3, her leg is twitching in her sleep like a dog. Wounder what Unicorns dream about?

This strip was obviously inspired by the author’s kitty cat. Streched out in a sunbeam, purring and twiching in dreamland. Sleeping horses do not purr, but may make some interesting breathing sounds that could come close. A horse will sleep laid out like that for only about an hour or so and only when they feel safe. It is an ultimate expression of trust for an equine to lay down and sleep in your presence. I am sure this last point applies to our unicorn in the last frame.

    “Unicorns do NOT purr.”

At least not in polite company…

“Calvin and Hobbes” is a wanna-be “Barnaby” strip. It is not nearly as good.

A horse does make a noise like a purr. It is a little grunt/sigh of content. It isn’t as constant running as the cat purr..Mine would make the noise after taking a good roll and a dust bath. He’d lay out in the sunbeam like a cat. And he’d be so comfortable and happy I couldn’t resist sitting down in the dust pit and drowsing with him. Never where PHE is sitting, more by the shoulder.

No one needs to tear down any comic strips here.

I’ve stretched out more than once next to my sleeping mare – although I’d lean against her back, not her stomach.

I’ve never heard her purr but she has done fake snoring before… As I approached her one particularly nice day when she was laid out. When she saw me coming so she shut her eyes and made very determined heavy breathing noises: Look, I’m Asleep, Go Away. Then, after a few minutes, one eye opened very cautiously, saw me still standing there, shut with a snap, and the ‘snoring’ started again.

Dana has actually said that she regards comparison, even negative, with “Calvin and Hobbes” as high praise, so she’s all right. But I have a problem with teenagers who think the whole world was invented the day they were born, who cannot tell you who Richard Outcault was, or Winsor McCay, or Rudolph Dirks, or Frank King, or Roy Crane, or Milton Caniff, but assume a magisterial air as comic-strip critics all the same.

And, for myself, I find HN far more evocative of the realities of my childhood than C&H ever was, even despite the fact that I, like Archibald Grosvenor, “was a little boy”.

The only other purring thing I can think of has terrible claws and the pointiest teeth… does that apply here?
