Things that go “fold” and “mutilate” in the night are no joy, either.

A spindle is also known in the UK as a bodkin. I found that out by reading mystery novels by Cyril Hare.

“"God’s bodkin, man, much better: use every man after his desert, and who shall scape whipping? Use them after your own honor and dignity — the less they deserve, the more merit is in your bounty?” – Willy S.

what gets me is that there’s a period on the end of Spindle. not an exclamation mark, but a period. it’s somehow creepier that way

Companies sent computer cards with data on them that you were supposed to send back so they wouldn’t have to enter it when they got your check. The holes had easy to recognize patterns. Spindle holes would corrupt the data. Early IT hackers knew that if you punched the second hole down (a – sign) over the last number of the amount, it became a credit. The computer would mark your account paid and refund you your check.

I agree with Tirasmol. Much creepier with the period instead of the exclamation point. I can imagine Ben Lewis’ Phantom pronouncing the word.

Sing along with Sherlock: “What goes up must come down… Spinnin’ wheel got to go ’round…”
