If there is anything the prospective recipient wants that he/she does not already have, it is only because the item is too expensive, in which case the giver should not spend that much either. Anything the giver chooses is unlikely to be exactly what the recipient would have chosen because of different knowledge and/or tastes. For these reasons, my family has a non-gift-giving pact and is very happy for it.

As a mom I love trying to make everyone happy, I love

surprising my children with more than what they asked for.

I’m not always able to shop for others but when can they’re

    pleasantly surprised.

cash is nice but it usually ends up being spent on rent or something similar. Nice surprises are better. Hand knitted socks. Interesting spice mixes. That sort of thing.

@Ronald Davis …. are you a robot? lol. Sorry but the way you phrased that is overly formal. I also have to say that I am grateful my family does not have such a pact, and I think your assumption is wrong.

My mom would make us hunt for our gifts, especially if they were hard to wrap. She would write up clues, wrap the first one in a package to go under the tree (often with a brick or something to camouflage it). They were little poems, and we had to figure out what they meant, so we’d know where to go to find the next clue. After several clues, we’d find our gift. Both my parents are deceased now, but it left some wonderful memories.

let’s say clothes, video games, music.. yup. definitely cash. music: i still get music on cd, if i say music, i probably will get music i don’t care and it would be a waste; same with clothes, do other people know my size and my taste? most probably i would get it wrong, so more waste that takes space in a closet and will never be used. Video games, same thing. Yes there are video games that are very popular and you can not go wrong with those.. probably i already have them. so how about you don’t try to guess and instead i get something i really like or need? wise
