Good Morning, Vagabonds. My friend/former co-worker has been trying for years to invite me to her home in Westchester County, NY. I grew up in Westchester (Yonkers) and dread going back because I don’t drive and while young I hated walking almost 1/2 mile to the bustop and waiting in the cold for a bus. I always used to dream about living next to a subway station and now I do. In fact, my job was across the street from my home!
Finally I decided to visit her because I had a photo I took of her last June at her 80th birthday at the exact instant she realized it was a huge surprise party. Her expression was priceless. I also wanted to give her and her 2 daughters, who had arranged the suprrise party, each a copy of my self-published novel. (She was so surprised that I had written it and immediatly began to read it as soon as I left).
The trip from the Bronx to Westchester was long. I had to take 3 busses and passed various “monuments” from my teenage period: The homes of various high school friends; Roosevelt High School, where my sisters went to school in Yonkers. Finally I reached her home. She had wanted to treat me to a buffet, but I told her, after an enormous Thanksgiving dinner, I couldn’t think of food. I don’t have the energy to make this trip again, but her yorkie was so cute and friendly.
I took the train home – it was faster, but I lost my orientation when I exited the train station and took the bust east toward Little Italy in the Bronx instead of west to the Grand Concourse. Finally, on the last bus going home, I met 3 Ghanian women who taught me 2 words in Ashanti: “How are you” and “Thank you.” I wrote the words in my addressbook and may use them one day.
Morning, Village.We’re in Grapevine, Texas, the self-acclaimed Christmas Capital of the World. It is pretty. We walked downtown last night and looked at the Christmas lights. Yesterday I visited the grave of my great grandfather, who came to this great state in 1841. Then we visited the real Lonesome Dove, a church established in 1838. My ancestors were the founding fathers and mothers. Today we’re going to meet some friends and do some shopping in the quaint old shops. Tonight we’ll go to a dinner theater.
Today “us girls” are going shopping for my daughter’s Wedding Dress. This is just the first go round, seeing what’s out there, and what styles she would like. Of course, there will be tears!!
Last night we were at a great Mexican restaurant in Old Town, and their Mariachi band (8 or 9 ) played to our table for a very long time, and sang a traditional love song to our L&B, it was also tears time for me.
We also met our younger daughter’s boyfriend…..also a very nice guy!
What a trip so far! When I get a free minute, I’ll download the pictures and email them to y’all. Make sure I have your email address.
We went to a new (to us) outdoor shooting range yesterday to get some target practice with our 22 rifles. They apparently don’t consider a 22 a rifle, and put us on the pistol range. The only problem with that is the pistol shooters go out onto the range to various distances from the targets, and it is extremely dangerous (and forbidden) to shoot at a target from behind someone’s back. Plus, the other shooters kept on taking turns heading back to the tables for reloading, so there was always someone out on the range shooting and we couldn’t even set up our targets. We left after about 1/2 hour of waiting. They were nice enough to refund the range fees. Everyone kept telling us how things were never that busy, and we should come back at a later date when they actually start calling a cease fire every twenty minutes so people can safely set up targets. I think we’ll just look for a different range. After all, this is Nevada, and there are lots of ranges, both indoor and out.
We watched Funny Girl last night. I could listen to Streisand sing all day!

Remember the email list I made of all the books I have in my New York apartment? Well, last night,I got very ambitious and listed all the dates and volume and issue numbers of the genealogical periodicals I have. This way I can compare them with what I have in Miami and make sure there are no duplicates. It took me about 3 hours – my periodicals go back to the 1980s but are nicely displayed.

Arye, I wish I had your ambition. I have a good list of all of my comics collection (13,000+) only because my husband wrote a program for me to catalog them. Unfortunately, the only computer that had that program loaded crashed, so the printed copy I have is the only one that exists. We also have a printed copy of the program if we ever decide to load it into one of our current computers, but that would mean hand inputting all 13,000 of them again. We have a list of all of our movies on tape or DVD, but not of our books. The movie list comes in handy when I want to buy a new one. I can never remember if we have one or not. I have purchased duplicates more than once. By the way, does anyone want a copy of “Harvey” with Jimmy Stewart? That’s my latest duplicate and I had planned on putting it out with the donations.
