I’ve NEVER understood the idea that kids think their parents’ kissing is “icky” – my Dad would get up from the supper table almost every night and give my Mom a big hug and kiss right there in the kitchen, and my sister and I thought it was a natural part of life at home. Later, I realized how blessed we were to have parents that felt that way about each other.
I’ve never seen my parents show any affection to each other, and they are within a touch of their 50th anniversary. We once went on vacation with another family that did, and it was amazing to me that they didn’t dislike each other!
I’m glad to see “BC” writers Mastroianni and Hart haven’t forgotten … but nearly every cartoonist has decided their strips are too important for posting Remembrance/Armistice/Veterans Day accolades in. SHAME ON YOU LYNN.
My wife and I hug and kiss with abandon … we WANT our kids to see how husband and wife should be affectionate with each other. they cringe, but they also tell us they love it. My parents did the same. My wife’s parents never did and it was very sad. Her mom would be so shocked when her dad tried to give her a kiss on his birthday or some special occasion. It was never on impulse or daily. Now he is gone. I once asked him when he was alive why did they ever stay married all those years: he was surprised at my question but just said they were “used” to each other and that was all. Sad way to live as a married couple. Fault was on both sides.

Oh, so your own children are considered as “the public”?

Ha,ha,ha. I felt the same way when my own parents did this in front of me and my brother.

When my parents were being “icky” we left them alone, because it only happened after they were making up after a fight.

We have Remembrance Day, and it’s not a “celebration” so much as a Solemn Day of Remembering the Deaths of Veterans as well as those injured.

My parents were affectionate with each other and would kiss and hug in front of us. They would also have date nights from time to time.

There’s a terrific video by Terry Kelly called ‘A pittance of time’. It’s worth a watch. Just google it.

Rene Tray: The proper response should have been, “We have several, and you are in one of them.”
