I, unfortunately, was the female version of Gunther in high school. No, he is not gay. And no, I am not a lesbian. We both just get so nervous around the person we are attracted to that our speaking and social skills decide to take a very long, awkward hike.

Don’t worry dude, it gets better. Rosa, just leave him alone until he calms down. Since that is going to take a couple of years, you might want to find a different guy.

Well, I don’t know that ‘leaving him alone’ is all that healthy for him. It would only encourage his already pathetic self confidence to dip further.

I remember what it’s like to be painfully shy around members of the opposite sex. Fortunately I finally broke out of that inhibited state, but it’s painful, and it took me a long time. Gunth may lose Rosa if he doesn’t grow a backbone, but these things do happen.

Rosa – Get Gunther to a movie or alone somewhere for a minute – and deliver a good, slow kiss. Gunther might respond – or freeze up. Rosa should say “Gunther – this is where we need to go.” If Gunther doesn’t make any effort – yeah – time for Rosa to move on – and maybe one day we’ll see if somebody else can pull it off. Tiffany? It’s wierd… Gunther’s intelligence can be a bond – and/or a barrier.

It’s over. Luann can try to keep them together, but it’s over.

Meanwhile, everything’s going according to plan in Greg’s eyes.

Gunther won’t make any move, so you have to jump his bones if you want him. If you read the strip, you would know that, Rosa…

It’s like Greg doesn’t WANT to write about any of our characters getting into real life adult relationships as they get older. I am just waiting to see how long it will be before he throws a wrench into the ONLY interesting storyline at present…and that would be the relationship between Brad and Toni. I will be done reading this strip if he breaks those two up, I’ll tell you that much is for sure.

Take it from someone who has been there – Gunther is so greatly afraid of rejection – in part because he was spurned by Luann – that he doesn’t want to run the risk of being hurt a second time – by Rosa. He has rationalized that no one could ever possibly want, or love him and has emotionally retreated so deep within himself because the heartache and, in his mind humiliation, of a second rejection would be another blow to his low self-esteem. Rosa needs to grab him by something other than his hand if there is to be any hope for a relationship that is something other than platonic. If Rosa asserted herself in such a manner Gunther would be a changed man and would no longer be an emotional wimp.

I believe Gunther is terrified of the loss of control over his, his, uh well, his “man parts” while walking down the hall at school if he should touch the object of his attraction.

It will be interesting to see how patient Rosa is. She appears fed up, but it could be simple annoyance and lack of understanding. Still, when a girl demonstrates “it’s ok to…” and a guy doesn’t, whatever that happens to be, she would most likely consider it a rebuff. Perhaps Luann can clarify some things for Rosa, like what it really means to be painfully shy.

Looks to me as though Rosa is hinting that she is nearing the end of her patience with Gunther and his affection repression…. Maybe it is in the works that Gunther and Luann will again become the Odd Couple.

He was using his hand holding hand to hold his book strap. Just didn’t occur to him to change sides. Did not occur to him she wanted to hold hands as much as he did. Too much respect sometimes gets in the way of fun.

Several days ago our discussion was: what character is strong enough to have a spin-off strip?

We forgot that one already has had his own strip for about 25 years! Who? Gunther. His strip? Peanuts. (He was younger then and went by the name “Chuck”)

I was one of those shy people in the past, but even I would have had a better reaction to a girl like Rosa who openly admits to liking him. The story line of Gunther being a MEGA chicken little has finally crossed into the “I am so bored with him it hurts.” category.

I hope he shows proper appreciation for the clarity of vision that lets you see below the surface.

Constitutional shyness (the kind Professor Jerome Kagan has studied at great length), which your husband and Gunther and I have, is something that can be detected in utero. One of its most disabling characteristics is what you might call a problem with the signal-to-noise ratio. In my case the problem is mainly auditory; in school, in a crowded, noisy hallway, it was exhausting to separate what somewhat was saying to me from the background sound. For some, it’s more tactile or visual. In any case, I think Gunther’s problem taking her hand was at least in part a fear of sensory overload…along with a fear of being laughed at by others and a sense of unworthiness fueled by years of being inept at things that are valued in boys.

I think if Rosa had gotten him alone, things would have been quite different.

    @Brdshtt

Nah, he’s just waving good-bye to both of them. It’s one of those catch-22 situations. Girls want a good guy that makes them feel attractive, but shy guys tend to be good guys that don’t have the faith in themselves to make a move. So, women get frustrated and end up going with men who are less nice but are more sure and adventurous because they put themselves out there and make the woman feel attractive, which is honestly probably the most important thing to them.
