Saw some polls after the debate. showed fighure like 55% Biden 49% Ryan, helped their party 85% Biden 75% Ryan… figures just don’t compute. Can’t people figure there is only a total of 100% for anything? If they meant 85% of the Dems/viewers felt he help and 15%felt he hurt, say that. but you can’t have 85% and 75%.
These debates are the bad side of rhetoric. I notice that most people are talking about cosmetics — physical or otherwise — and very few are talking issues. The issues are fairly clear, they have been for months now. Obama didn’t have a good debate, but he still has the right side of the argument, and no matter how surprisingly well Romney did, his arguments don’ make sense — if you can figure out what he stands for, anyway. Imagine if we were to try to settle scientific arguments this way — “Well, I thought Einstein’s hair was just crazy, and it really distracted from his presentation, and the way he mumbles — can’t he even speak English properly?”
Well, what could be points of debate? Health care? The ACA isn’t the best plan — personally I think a single-payer system would be a lot better — but at least it’s something, something that can be improved. Does Romney have anything substantive to offer? Except keeping the parts of the ACA that he likes?
Foreign policy? If Romney is going to be Bush #3, then everybody watch out!!! It’s a complicated world out there, and I wouldn’t say Obama has been flawless, but overall he’s done well. No contest there.
For me, the only point where I see a real debate has to do with the national debt. How much is too much? Have we reached a worrisome point or not? If we pull back too soon, do we risk another economic crisis? If we decide we do have to lower the debt, how fast do we do it, and how do we do it? We can (and should) raise taxes on the wealthy, but that won’t get enough revenue. So do we have to cut? Where? I’d go for defense.
And if a lot of the problem comes from expenditures on health care, how do we get those under control? One can demonstrate over and over that public health is really where you get bang-for-your-buck, but when people are old and sick and dying, they want all the bells and whistles (and I’d probably be right there making the same demands). How do we say No in a reasonable way?
So, Dred, there’s a start. Your move. Notice I didn’t mention anyone’s hair or chuckling.
