Ted Rall for October 17, 2012
Transcript:
The Pentagon may soon award a "Distinguished warfare medal" to operators of remote-controlled drones. Man 1: Ignoring his buggy laptop and crappy joystick, he valiantly clicked a command to take out an enemy drone, which had been tracking a driverless car carrying our servers... after his drone was hacked- Man 2: Not so fast! That was friendly fire!

Sorry ralls, but after having one of my platoons saved by one of those pilots, I’d say he earned it.

What’s all the fuss about? We’ve had drones for years. (They’re stored in Washington under the capitol dome.)

Careful, Ted. Drone operators do training flights here in the US.

Afghanis are the currency of Afghan. Afghans are the people.
At least you call them “soldiers” instead of “enemy combatants.”

That 14-year-old girl might live, which is more than one can say for the victims of American drone attacks. 98% of whom have been proven innocent by a Stanford University study.

I oppose the use of armed drones overseas. I’m also getting more concerned about the use of drones here at home. The excuses are for testing and development, training, and most significantly “security surveillance”- of private citizens. Now, loiter time over crime scenes, etc makes a semi-valid point, but, where does “no warrant shall issue except upon probable cause” enter into the argument, made mostly by the “anti-crime” right-wingers, but supported by the left as well in the name of “public safety”??

I thought medals were awarded to individuals who faced danger, went against all odds etc. These people are sat away from the action and not in the thick of things.

What a silly strip. No drone driver has the authority to “push the red button”. In fact, in modern warfare, practically every weapon shot is first authorized by lawyers who are competent in the rules of war. Gone are the days when reckless lieutenants or sergeants charged the hill against all odds to save mankind.

I fail to see the difference between sending a drone at a house that might contain civilians, dropping a bomb on a house that might contain civilians and shooting into a house that might contain civilians But apparently the first is a no-no and the others are OK.
