I have a grandfather who served in the Vietnam War. He got 2 purple hearts, and that’s what I did for my Veteran’s Day paper.

One of my late uncles was a messenger in WWII, he was captured (POW) 3 times, escaped twice and liberated the last time. Another uncle was a waist gunner in a bomber that was shot down, he was declared KIA (papers sent to mother, etc), his name was engraved on the memorial wall at the county seat (Tampa), and he (finally) came home to his family (very much alive). They were a tough bunch.

Don’t know any vets… my Grampa was 4-F (WW1) from an accident he had with an axe (He worked as a lumberjack in his teens) and my Mom’s Uncle never got overseas as the War ended (WW2) before he was done basic training

Years ago met one vet who saw Patton and Bradley in the flesh. Said Bradley was Patton’s whipping boy. He was also involved in Korean Conflict. He kept a weapon on one end of trailer and ammo in the other side of trailer.Of course secured. If a burglar would come into the trailer he would probably run out the door. Of course he was so frightened during the “police action” he could have swam from Korea back to the States. He had gotten a flag and was planning to donate it to an elementary class. He had a feeling for children and the reason was what he saw in Europe when he was over there in WW II.

Hail to the real veterans! But, in this context, this is a kind of win for Tiff; and those are rare enough. So, I’m scoring this : Tiff, 1; Fogerty, 0.

One should remember that Nov 11th is about the PEACE, not the wars (WW1 Ended Nov 11, 1918) Unfortunately, on that very same day, in a German field hospital, a wounded German soldier of Austrian birth vowed that he would get revenge over the traitors that “sold out” his adopted country** (Germany) **in his deluded mind, at least
Of course, this unknown Corporal, recovering from a gas attack that nearly blinded him, was to make good on his threat 20 years later… his name? Adolf Hitler, the insane maniac who began WW2

A few things: High school will always be war. She does have a point there. Yes, she is being self-centered, but was the assignment explained properly? I know she’s a ditz, but what if the schools she’s been to just didn’t really talk about veterans and what they’ve done for us? Also, this speaks to idea that some words are getting way overused these days, to the point that they’ve lost some of their meaning. We tend to slap words like “veteran” and “premium” on everyone and everything.

For those of you who say you don’t know any veterans, you probably know a lot more of them than you think. Many of us don’t go out of our way to bring attention to ourselves. That is how we served. Did our duty quietly, and when it was time to quit, left quietly. Go to church, any church, today, and I know you will meet some veterans. God Bless you, and us veterans.

Was a Navy Radarman during the Vietnam era (DD-824 and LCC-20). I drive by a cemetary not far from where we live in PA and there are at least 1000 graves with American flags on them. Every time I pass there is Veterans Day.

Without any kind of experience – either their own or family members – the vast majority of Americans are so removed from what military service entails that there are great misconceptions about our veterans. Few would consider themselves ‘heroes’ – and rightly so. Let us give them the respect and appreciation due them all — but particularly those who are truly combat veterans.

Good Bless our Veterans (my dad was in the Army in WWII) I gringe to think what would have happened if we didn’t win WWII. Korea is still being debated but we held the line. I will never forget how the ungrateful people of our country treated the Vietnam Vets – it was a disgrace. If you did not agree with the Vietnam fight, it was no reason to disrespect our military personnel for doing their job. God Bless our Veterans every one of them!

WWII – three grandfathers – European front.
Vietnam – father, two uncles – served in national guard reserves. called up for active duty, never served – treaty was signed two day after the letter was received, call-up canceled.
Most recently – one cousin. Hit in head by sniper round in Iraq, bullet clipped helmet and goggles before hitting the side of his skull. No penetration, but has some brain damage to memory centers causing trouble recalling short-term memories. This also causes problems with creating long term memories, but the problem is minor.
Myself – planned to join Marines after HS, unable due to epilepsy.

my father was a wwII vet, he never wanted to talk about what he saw, and what happened to his buddies, but the scars were there. god bless all our troops, now and in the past. I was proud to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missle Crises. This is the greatest country in the world, and we shoud all be proud of all our vets who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. God Bless America!!

Recall that another corporal by the name of Bonaparte after the terror in France started his own European war. Similar in some ways to what Hitler and company wanted. Neither of them were helpful to the world and its people.
Ummmm… did I say anything about Hitler being a GOOD thing? I called him a maniacAs for Napoleon, I never even mentioned him. Truth be known, I am a life-long pacifist who agrees with John Lennon (Give peace a chance); however, I have to agree that it was wrong to blame Vietnam vets for doing their best in an unwinnable wae

Was never a supporter of war.(etc)
I feel exactly the same way; it was of course imperative to destroy Hitler and his evil racist regime, however, for the most part war is just a move of countless politicians/industrailists looking to profit from the misery and death of those they rule over

Mikeyj: In the six years I lived in Canada, there were some 2,000, half in American Exiles in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver area). To my knowledge, I never met one, although that is hardly a way to initiate conversation. I was at a noncredit course following the 1976 UN Conference there on Appropriate Technology. One workshop was titled Marketing Small Industry Products in Canada. One US participant facetiously said, “Do you permit Americans in here?” The moderator said, “Why not? I am one.” About a third present were current or former US citizens; in discussions between sessions many mentioned US military experience. Deserters and dodgers were the only ones to hit the “underground railroad” to Canada in those days. We lost the cream of the crop of our youth as well. .For full disclosure, I had a V-A (over age) classification and went to find work free of the blacklists I had gotten on in public service, civil rights work, etc.

war comes in many forms. Tiffany is a veteran of a particularly nasty one.-Well, maybe not as nasty as poison gas, flame throwers, nuclear weapons, fire bombings, napalm, booby traps planted on babies, beheadings, human experimentation on POWs.-Come to think of it, maybe it makes more sense to remember people saying it was the best years of their lives.
