In my neighborhood, it’s faster to walk to school than take the bus, but since we have to cross a busy road, many take the bus (we walk). One of my neighbors just figured this out last week, and instead of catching the bus at 7:06, they’ve been walking at 7:30am.
I only ever took a school bus on field trips. Our town was zoned. You had to live more than two miles from the school (I think it was two) to get bus service.

When I was in school, the neighborhoods in front and behind mine had school bus service. Our block did not. We walked 4 miles to school.
