John McPherson makes us howl at his adroit mix of everyday settings and extraordinary events. John’s offbeat, oddball characters turn up in familiar places, but their actions are always hilarious and unexpected.

That might help a little. LOL

Given that the Pony Express was faster than the current mail service, this seems quite appropos for the present day.

And the Pony Express was private. The freighting firm of Russell, Majors & Waddell created the Pony Express and ran it for 19 months. Hmmm, private freight company, delivering 1st class mail, could be a good idea once again.

The U S Mail has lasted a little longer than 19 months

I mailed a letter that after a week still hasn’t arrived at it’s destination – now I know why.

I’d rather have them keep saturday mail and cut two days in the week, say tuesdays and thursdays. Then move to 4 tens…employees keep their hours but less delivery costs.
I say this cause I’m usually the one getting stuck waiting for something to come over a weekend and it delays things an extra day or two right now, but with no weekend delivery it would delay things an extra day or so. Don’t ask me how or why something that is suppose to come friday can’t be delivered saturday, but has to wait till monday. I’ve never understood it myself.

At UPS rates? $3.00 a letter..

A mite defensive, are we? Of course the Pony Express was a combination of riders and telegraph, what we might call multi-modal today, and took ten days to get something from coast to coast. I’m sure the USPS could do it quicker now, but with usual standard delivery, I don’t think so dam much quicker.
And the Express was superceded by telegraph, not the USPS.

The only fiscal problem at USPS is the requirement imposed by GOPers in Congress to fund postal workers’ pensions fully through 2040, the sole intention of which was to trash USPS. GOPers want everybody to be forced to pay FedEx $14 to pay the electric bill.

Are these really old strips? There’s a 14 trillion debt now

The postal service recently posted an $8.5 billion loss.

Yup. Were it not for Congress’s absurd demand re: the funding of pensions, the Postal Service would actually be in the black. Personally, I’ve found their service to be a bargain (at present prices, I can send something from my front porch to my parent’s front yard (2,204 driving miles) in 2 to 3 days’ time for a mere 45 cents), and after using UPS to send a document and having it cost more than twice what it would have by USPS, I’m going to be pretty reluctant to use somebody other than the Postal Service again.
