I grew up in a melting pot neighborhood - interspersed with factories where they made lightning arrestors, parking meters, etc - where literally no two adjacent neighbor’s parents or grandparents were of the the same national origin, but we were all very proudly united in knowing that we were all Americans … living in a land of opportunity where if you worked hard and studied hard you could get ahead.
With the elite now being branded not as the wealthy but the educated, the populist movement is content with fringe fantasy ideology replacing facts and figures. Globalization and changing demographics are also deemed dangerous to America’s well being … or is that Amerika’s well being, now that we need translators at campaign meetings. Asimov’s nightmare seems to be happening, right before our eyes.
" There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."~~ Isaac Asimov
