I guess Chuck doesn’t believe anyone who takes a moderate position about anything can be a Republican.

It’s called “Secretary of Defense”, not “Secretary of War”. A well balanced man with first-hand experience (and the scars to prove it) it the ideal fit for this position. The U.S. defense budget is so bloated that it is choking the nation to death. The jingoism was understandable, the traumatic effect of 9/11 gave Card Blanche to the hawks.

    -

But Osama is dead, Iraq is relatively stable and Afghanistan a mess no amount of money can fix. So why is the defense budget still rising in the U.S.? The “terrible, terrible” cuts to the Pentagon that were proposed by the President did not even shrink the budget, it merely slowed the increase! Were will this end? You do the math! And one more thought for Republicans: you want smaller government? Ever realized that the military is part of the federal government?

I’ve heard that Hagel is easy on Iran and won’t want to go to war with Iran. I don’t want to go to war with anyone. Guess I won’t do for a cabinet post.
Six years ago, we were making plans to invade Iran and even had troops inside Iran. (Covertly)

Yes they called them RINO’s and drummed them out of the party. There is no voice of reason in the Republican party.

Fundamentalist Christians really have weak faith.

They demand massive armed forces for America and Israel because they know, deep down, that their god CANNOT defend them and they must do so themselves.

That’s probably the dumbest thing you’ve ever said. It’s at least in the top three.

Perhaps the question we should be asking is not why Republicans might be against Hagel, but why Obama chose him. But we’ll never get a straight answer from Obama, and y’all can only make conjectures.

Yet you were calling for a cut in the defense budget

For a person highly schooled in logic and reason you really sound over the top with these totally opinionated, argumentative and unsubstantiated remarks. I realize you are not an American, you are very liberal and an atheist. Somehow that doesn’t equate with lambasting fundamentalist Christians with an accusative statement pulled out of thin air.

I see absolutely no hope of ever reconciling our problems in this country if we continue to maintain this tone of dialog. We need to raise the standard of discussion, not debase it to the point of complete irrelevance.

I think Obama chose Hagel knowing that he won’t be approved.
A story yesterday put Congress’ rating lower than root canals, cockroaches, and Nickelback, among a few other things.

Mickey, you didn’t engage in any dialog or discussion with DrCanuck…you didn’t address the content of his post at all. Your comment was just a wordier version of Ansonia’s.

Perhaps you could explain to him why Christianity is the only religion that demands, and gets, the exclusive support of the US government? Why does it require that?

Once Upon a Time the slot was indeed known as Secretary of War
