They laughed at the Star Wars idea because it was laughable. It is physically impossible to protect a country the size of the US from a concentrated, massive missile attack. Israel may have a system which can shoot down the technically inferior slow moving rockets from Hamas fired in small bursts or singularly, but even they couldn’t stop a concentrated attack. Sipping from the Kool-Aid again Chuck.

Obviously the USSR didn’t share your opinion. They understood that when America sets its sights on a goal, they accomplish it.
Or at least we used to.

Darsan is the good little Dem now isn’t he. You can tell he was never in the military (or a student of military history) because there has never been a 100% effective weapon. “Star Wars” was very effective in one thing, it basically ended the Cold War because the Soviets couldn’t afford to try and keep up.

Reagan was the best President ever. Sigh. Now we have the worst president ever. Reagan made you feel good about yourself and made it easy for small business to start and thrive. O sees all business as his personal ATM machine.

You don’t get it, do you. The fallacy of Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’ defense is that it could not be 100% effective. And when your enemy has enough weapons to destroy you 100 times over, a defense that is 99% effective is a waste of money. And Star Wars never had the promise of even being even 50% effective.

As far as crediting Reagan with the demise of Communism in Russia, that’s like crediting Nixon for the Apollo Moon landing in 1969. The Apollo program had been advancing for the better part of the decade. While Reagan’s fondness for WWII (battleships) may have hastened the fall of Communism, the real cause was the inherent weaknesses of the system.

Iran must be looking at “Iron Dome” and sweating. If rockets fired from twenty miles away can be intercepted and shot down, how can Iran deliver a rocket from that distance without it being destroyed. Maybe Iran will stop working on nukes and star working on a missile defense system instead.
Ima, I also liked Reagan for the most part however, under the current mood in the Republican Party, Mr. Reagan would not have a chance of getting nominated to any office sought by his party. I would also argue that Geo. Washington was the best president ever because he was the first leader of a nation to peacefully step down from power and pass the office to a successor elected by the people. TJ and AL were also great, but my second favorite was Teddy Roosevelt for ending child labor and setting up the National Park Service. If you think Obama is the worst president in history, you don’t know history.
    Respectfully,
    C.

Reagan raised taxes and his administration started the government subsidized phone service you attribute to and criticize Obama for.

The number of fallacies in your politically partisan arguments are quite numerous. I would suggest that you research the effect on the Russian economy of Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative. You might also be interested in the fact that Bill Clinton continued the research and renamed the SDI the Ballistic Missile Defense Agency. Bush then renamed it the Missile Defense Agency. You must remember that this is research. Science begetting technology begetting engineering.

i had friends who worked at UCSB dept of Theoretical Physics in the 80’s. They had a huge grant to focus on “mapping the universe.” They accomplished their goal in conjunction with the military being able to place satellites at strategically located sites. All they were waiting for (aside from the enormous cost) was the laser systems that would be installed in the satellites. Lawerence Livermore labs in California was well on the way to developing the lasers when the money ran out. Cash is king.

They had an experimental system that was successful aboard a Boeing 747 call YAL-1. Funding was cut and it went in storage.

The Cold War was started soon after WWll. There was a multi-pronged strategy of strategic alliances, intentional disruption of supplies, and propoganda (Voice of America) to convince Soviet citizens of the need for governmental change. Foreign policy is like tending an orchard. You put the right elements in place, and hope for fortunate circumstances. Reagan just happened to be president when the Soviet empire crumbled under its own weight. To be fair, he rushed the end by outspending them militarily. On the other hand, we started deficit spending to do this, and his reign was the beginning and acceleration of transfer of tax burden from corporations and investors to wages.

As for “Star Wars”, this is corporate welfare for defense companies. Anyone who fires missiles will be quickly identified, and there will be some time to react, not that much reaction can be done. What we should instead be worried about is one person with a briefcase, or a few crazies who will hijack an airplane. Star Wars will not stop this, and this is a much, much bigger threat. If we truly want to stop bankrupting the country, ending this program is a good way to start.

Yes, and space flight is impossible…..and computers are impossible. Actually, nothing is impossible. It just takes imagination and determination.

Yeah, we should institute the same screening process the Israelis use. Much less expensive and much more effective.

Yeah, but that involves stereotyping which is politically incorrect. We can’t do that regardless of cost.

Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says the Obama administration deserves some credit for Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system, which has protected Israelis during the rocket assaults that have taken place in the last five days.
    .
“The president and Congress here are entitled to, I believe, a lot of credit for providing that system to Israel,” said Levin, D-Mich., on ABC’s This Week. “It’s a very effective system.”
    .
President Obama secured $70 million for the Iron Dome program earlier this year, which was part of a bill he signed that expanded military cooperation between the U.S. and Israel.
