There’s an editorial in the paper today which states that Republican members of the House of Representatives have gotten a memo to vote against Boehner and to vote for someone more conservative for Speaker of the House. Although I agree that Boehner is a poor choice for many reasons (for example, his smiling statement “I got 98% of what I wanted. I’m happy” [for losing our credit rating and requiring us to pay higher interest on the debt]), it makes sense to me that going more conservative means getting more combative. A new Speaker will not want to seem conciliatory, and will have to project a reputation for “toughness” (= obstructionism). At this time, we cannot afford any more antagonism on the Hill. We can hope Republicans will remember “Country First” should be more than a slogan.

We ALL depend on our government for National Defense, Our Roads, Air Traffic Control, the Police, Our Fire Departments, Safe, Clean Water and Air and Disaster Aid. I respect Ron Paul but talking points do not a good government make.

Your ENTIRE country is dependent upon your government to some degree and always has been. And they ALWAYS have elected their leaders.

He is actually quoting Alex De Tocqueville from comments he made on Democracy. What it implies is that an entitlement mentality will prevail in the electorate and they will keep electing people to “feed and grow” the entitlements until it bankrupts the country. Then in it’s weakened state the country would likely be taken over by a dictator. I’m summarizing greatly for the sake of space.
Pertinent to today’s sentiment, he observed: "Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.”

Alex De Tocqueville was right. We do need to go back… to when people worked hard to earn their own living instead of relying on government handouts. To when we had freedom to do what we wished instead of having to ask for permission from every level of government from the local city council to the director of health and human services and the environmental protection agency.
