It all comes full circle. Originally, Brahm Stoker’s Dracula was a metaphore for London being overrun by “less desirables” from Eastern Europe leading to crime, corruption, and a general sense that London wasn’t as good as it was in the past.

The Unions are now considered undesireable because they are asking for what was promised to them. They negotiated in good faith with Politicians that were interested in their own careers rather then what was right for everyone in the state.

California is a microcosem for what is going on in the US. Notice that the tax base in California is dwindling because the people who California says “Can afford to pay taxes” are tired of footing the bill for all of those people who get to vote but don’t contribute to the upkeep of the state.

Democracy doesn’t work when all the citizens are interested in doing is voting themselves the money out of the treasury – Obviously I’m requoting a good quote in my own words.

@et2008 – I guess the public employees should have figured Risk into their negotiations. They trusted the politicians to give them what had been agreed but didn’t get terrilbly upset when they saw the imbalanced budget. Did they honestly think they would be untouched by the effects of the economy?

Illinois is in the same boat and the public employees have been paying into the system for years and allowing the state to spend away their money. Now they are mad because the state is claiming poverty.

For all of you reading this. Save some of what you make every year and put it aside for a rainy day. Depending on the governement (State, Local, Federal) is foolishness. My wife is a teacher and used to complain vociferously about me making her set aside 10% of what she made in savings. Now she thinks I’m a hero because she is well on the way to a comfortable retirement no matter what the state of Illinois does.

I just need to figure out how I can opt out of SS so that I can take the money I’m pouring into that rathole and save that aside as well.

It’s Slavery to make my children pay into a system that supports todays seniors knowing full well that they won’t be able to collect any of that because eventually it will fail. It’s unsustainable. It was an ill conceived system to start with and it is becoming more and more of a ponzi scheme every day.

You must have a lovely collection of protest t-shirts to record your blind support of this fantasy.

Social Security will continue unless Mr Ryan’s plan is enacted. If the U.S. government would honor the bonds purchased by SS full benefits could be paid. As they have indicated no desire to keep their word, a reduced annuity will be necessary.
Eliminate the cap on SS/Medicare contributions.

MItt makes $20 MILLION a year, pays 13% in taxes (on what he’s DECLARED, but how much total?), but how much in California INCOME TAX while he remodels his home in La Jolla that will depend on California police and fire agencies, road crews, sewer, water, services etc, provided by those “union workers”.

They probably pay roughly twice the percentage in taxes as Mitt given their “incomes”, so, WHICH “class” is ripping the state off????

Yeah, who do those public employee unions think they are? The Government has a long history of breaking treaties, ask the Native Americans!
    .
How dare they think that a contract will be upheld when things get tough!
    .
How dare they think that government will go after the Medical industry to try to control costs when they can turn around and just demand that the little guy pay instead!
    .
Isn’t that the way the “Free Market” is supposed to work? The law of supply and demand? Oh, that’s right, there is no free market mechanism in the medical industry.

its amazing how gullible the rightwingers are to really go along with this idea of vilifying our police and teachers and principals and firemen and other public sector workers so that the rich can get richer. I mean in one breath you scream about class warfare when the rich are asked to pay their fair share yet in the next breath slam our public sector workers for organizing enough to get good benefits. Notice how the rich hate the organization of the less fortunate… guess thats why being a community organizer is being presented as such a bad thing now a days.

The passage of Prop 13 in California had consequences, the “Taxed Enough Already” crowd are determined not to learn from this and follow Grover Normquist over the edge..
    ……….

“Before Prop 13, in the 1950s and ‘60s, California was a liberal showcase. Governors Earl Warren and Pat Brown responded to the population growth of the postwar boom with a massive program of public infrastructure — the nation’s finest public college system, the freeway system and the state aqueduct that carries water from the well-watered north to the parched south. When Ronald Reagan was governor, he actually raised taxes. Then Proposition 13 shot the tires out of Pat Brown’s liberal state. Liberal legislative leaders such as Willie Brown and John Burton jerry-rigged repairs and kept the damaged vehicle running for 30 years. Now Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger says there is no choice but to complete the demolition by slashing essential services.
Proposition 13 was the brainchild of the late Howard Jarvis. The antitax crusader was a policy genius not unlike Franklin D. Roosevelt. Both shared an affinity for designing deep structural change that, once embedded in the political system, is nearly impossible to alter without a massive change of heart by voters."

And the Left complain because they want everything distributed to all, neglecting the fact that those who work will be paying for it all. Most liberals are either those who work to survive, or those who have gotten theirs and feel guilty (but don’t want to give any away (politicians, enteratinment industry, media). Those who sacrifice (police, firemen, teachers, military) to protect and/or enrich our society loose when the government gets involved.

banks don’t make you do anything you don’t do voluntarily. No business can. You are confusing businesses with government. Unions are government-authorized organized crime.
