Chuck Asay sifts the events of the day through his biblical worldview and tries to persuade readers to see things his way...that rights are given by a higher authority than the governments of men, that mankind is not the ultimate arbiter of truth and that our Constitutional Republic is worth protecting. Chuck believes ideas, not politicians rule the world. He tries to protect ideas which he thinks are good and attacks ideas he thinks bring harm.

Righties: Hate diplomacy.
That leaves sacrificing our military, even for a complete waste like Iraq.

Defending oneself isn’t what we’ve been doing. We’ve had our forces in many different countries for a very long time. It may be profitable, but it’s not defense. It’s occupation. It’s what the Roman and British Empires did.

So it’s the American defence budget that’s been preventing our cafes from being blown up by terrorists then, Chuck? And here was me thinking it had something to do with our police forces …

cdward: stop LYING.
That, or redo all of k-12 schooling as many times as it takes for you to fathom basic language comprehension.
The gd Romans never ever EVER tried to help, or liberate, ANYBODY.
I’m sick to death of you lowlife lefties LYING about our country. You’re not worthy to breathe its air.
We are the nation that sacrificed more than ANYONE during World War 2 to free Europe from it’s own stupidity–it’s own weakness and cowardice and arrogance in listening to leftwingers like Neville Chamberlain (whom Obama sounds like in every way imaginable when he speaks) instead of “conservatives” like Winston Churchill.
True, Russia lost more people than we did.. but they FAILED. Without our help, there’d be swastikas fluttering over Moscow today (not to mention swastikas fluttering over Paris, London, Copenhagen…)
America is not OCCUPYING Iraq, or Afghanistan, or South Korea, or anywhere else. We are either helping these countries become free democratic nations or else are–with their consent–defending them from nearby tyrants who would invade and mass-murder them without our aid.
THOSE are the facts in the year of our Lord 2009, cdweird. Lie all you want, throw your childish temper-tantrums and scream NO BLOOD FOR OIL all you want, but you cannot change the truth about this country’s motives and purposes for deploying its military overseas…

But But the world loves us now that Obama is our leader. We don’t need to defend our self his smile is our saving grace against those over sea bad guys. Plus if we do not mention that they are Islamic Muslim we can ignore them and if they blow something up it is just a man made bad thing, nothing we shall worry about.

scotty, the russians took Berile in the end, did they?
American sacrifice; 1941-1945, from an ocean away.
Russian sacrifice; 1939-1945 on their homeland.
Everyone sacrificed.

Free-assocaiate much, there, froggy?
Are we in the year 2009 just like Roman occupiers, then, as the previous lefty asserted? Or has America consistently proven itself unique in human history, helping other nations FREE themselves, helping them RETAIN control of their nations, rather than forcibly conquering them and subjugating their peoples, as Rome did?
And the Russians couldn’t have taklen anything but a leak in the snow without America first having shipped them all the war materials they needed to fight the Germans…
dtroutma said, 28 days ago
Scooter doesn’t realize that our economy is owned by other countries, like China, because of stupidity in the name of “profit”. We ARE occupying Iraq and Afghanistan for oil interests. The “Freidmanites” and “Chicago Boys” led this country under right-wingers to numerous errors, and over-reaching tactics that had nothing to do with “liberating” anyone.
It is time to turn that around, and show that strength is not just some moron with muscle, but, as in martial arts, the control of self- to defend, and conquer enemies using their own “strengths” against them, not brute force, which will fail.
Intellect is power, which is why Scotty and the servants of the master dork philosophy of fraud and deceit, will never understand the world, or their own fears.

The above is just simplistic blah-de-blah–hollow, meaningless rhetoric which translates into nothing in real-life terms.
America has since the 1960s been about as politically and culturally “right wing” as France. No matter how far towards the Godless Left we lurch, it’s never enough for Leftists.
They just keep steadily moving the bar both Leftward and downward, until eventually the nation either splits in two (which is about where it is right now, red state blue state dead state you state) or else collapses downwards on its rotted foundations and tumbles into the abyss…
Excuse me while I once again reread sections of Augustine’s “City of God”, in which Augustine argues with the Leftists of his own era, whom blamed the right-wingers (Christians) for the recent final collapse of Rome, which as Augustine correctly pointed out was destroyed from within by the same Leftists who were then busily pointing fingers at all the Christians…

Let me turn the tables, here, Lefties.
What is “truth?”
You two try to answer that while I close my eyes and think, “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”

That’s an interesting coincidence…Puppy (currently AKA Canis anphobei) posted that exact same “light shines…” quote on the 12/23 Asay thread last night, word for word, but she deleted it when I commented on it.

A cafe blown up in Europe? I don’t remember reading about that recently. Sure you don’t mean Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Pakistan? A lot of bombs there recently, which is strange? I mean don’t we have troops in those countries, aren’t we protecting them from terrorist?
No wonder those Europeans look worried, without us to protect them they won’t be safe like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Paskistan.

Chuck Asay’s cartoons typically require abstract thinking, which Ken Warren types sadly do not seem to possess…
a.c.d said, 28 days ago
This cartoon is such hogwash, it is true that the US does spend a lot in working with Europe as a military partner. The US has a greater number of logisitcal tools (helicopters, tanks etc), but it is Europe with the more than 1 million soldiers. This was the NATO trade off, and it is an insult to the EU to think that we would be unable to defend ourselves. With ESDP, which the US opposses, it is Europe who wants to break free of the burden of the US. It was our involvement in your stupid wars that got our cities blown up by terrorists, not the scaling back of American military power.
p.s It was Russia who gave up most during WWII, 20 million Russians by wars end. And they didnt need materials shipped to them, as Russia has THE LARGEST RESERVES OF EVERY NATURAL MATERIAL KNOWN TO EARTH (other than oil) and by that point Stalin had developed Russia into a modern military power, Hitler never at any point threatened to even touch Moscow, thanks to his genius plan to fight during the winter and the fact that Russia, due to is vastness and already strict control was basically unconquerable. So scott before you go around spitting on the blood of fallen Russians, I suggest you go hit your history books a little harder.
scottfreitas
said,
You better check your history books, and skim the lists of the “war aid” FDR shipped to Stalin.
Losing more people in terms of casualties isn’t the greater sacrifice when their deaths would have been in vain. Americans sacrificed both at home and abroad to ensure those Russian deaths WEREN’T in vain.
The myth that mere cold weather defeated the Germans (with no US help needed to bring about this result) grew from postwar Communism. You can’t find those claims being made back when the events took place because the people involved all knew better,,,
dtroutma said, 27 days ago
Scooter needs to learn the difference between “abstract” and just plain nuts. Basking in the heat of yet another Russian winter, the advancing Germans fell victim to sun stroke?
scottfreitas
said,
Not what i implied. But the fact is, the US helped get plenty of war materials into the hands of the Russians to help them fight. And FDR did work with Stalin to use strategies in Europe designed to help mess Germany up down on the Russian front. And US involvement WAS essential to Germany’s defeat. It was all tied together, and not in any simplistic way, either…

Pull our overseas troops back home and let the rest of the world fend for itself. Put our troops on our southern border with orders to “shoot to kill” all invaders, no questions, no warnings except for signs in English and spanish facing to the south declaring our side of the border a kill zone.
End all foreign aid. That includes all the money sent to Africa. Charity begins at home, take care of our own first. If other countries want to trade with us at fair market value, that’s fine. No more free handouts.
Send the UN packing to Europe or the Middle East to set up a new HQ. Tell them they’ve got one week to evacuate from NY then we send in the demolition team to tear the building down and put up a memorial to our war dead. Our funding of the U.N. will be cut to a more fitting level according to the support we’ve received from them, which is zero.
DRILL BABY DRILL!!! We’ve got our own oil & natural gas reserves, let’s use ‘em and tell the Arabs to drink their oil.

NoSpam, I wish I could understand how we manage all these annual billions in foreign aid, despite being hopelessly in debt.
Would be a nice trick to apply to my home accounting, if I could figure out how they do it.
NeoconMan said, 27 days ago
nospam4you, America has to keep foreign aid flowing to the Third World to protect “American interests” there (which is, of course, code words for the investments of America’s moneyed class). That’s what the army is for, too.

ANandy said, “The concept of defending oneself is beyond the grasp of many. ”
OK, WHAT were we defending ourselves from in Iraq? Come on, you big gasbag, give us a REASON.
NeoconMan said, 26 days ago
PlainBill, what were we defending ourselves from in Iraq? The Chinese, of course. If we hadn’t gotten our hands on that oil, China would have bought it. Can’t run our empire without oil for our war machines.
Anthony 2816

That’s a new one. From all the reasons, both true and lies, that Cheney and Rove gave (via mouthpiece Bush) for invading Iraq, I don’t recall the Chinese being mentioned.
Was that only covered on Faux News or something?
4uk4ata said, 26 days ago
No, there were some mentions iirc of Iraq trying to get an oil deal with China. It hadn’t gone all that far due to the embargo iirc, but the interest was definitely there.
NeoconMan said, 26 days ago
Anthony, do you really think Cheney/Rove would have given you the REAL reasons? And other than oil, take a look at a map and see how American military bases, allied or invaded, now encircle China. And all this Iraq and Afghanistan stuff starts to make sense.
What does the word “containment” mean to you?
Anthony 2816
said,

First question: I would have been in shock if they had.
Second question: If you refer to trying to contain the Chinese, I’d say it means “fruitless”.

Ummm.. Let me see if I have this straight…
If America doesn’t continue to be the world’s big stick carrier, then everybody will be killed as a result of our inaction.
BUT!
If America does stop paying for the needy to eat then those people will do for themselves and their lives will become bettered.
Huh…
Funny old world, innit?

CF: The history of the world didn’t start when Bush took office.
But since you were in your pre-teen years all during the Clinton administration, I’m sure you don’t know that.
cdward said, 25 days ago
church, the history of the world didn’t even start with America, but I’m sure you knew that. In fact, those pesky Europeans had a lot to do with the founding of the United States.
And for what it’s worth, that last line in the cartoon seems a little troubling. Asay says “We’re all equal now,” like it’s a bad thing. Indeed, we ARE all equal in God’s eyes.

The US may need China contained, but that’s different.

Parker, I chose that picture because I personally would rather look at it than a picture of a guy, and it’s certainly more esthetically pleasing than a picture of my own mug.
But if it really bothers you, I can change it. You be sure and let me know.
(And yes, I am a guy. Just one who’d prefer to look at a beautiful female face than a male one.)

churchill; I was thirteen when NATO bombed Serbia and I was the one explaining the conflict to my parents.
I did three years of history at MonctonU.
World history didn’t start with WW2. The ones you say you want to protect have histories further back than America’s. They defended themselves before the Americans came and they still can defend themselves.
