Yes, yes, it’s Progress that’s the enemy. It has nothing to do with rampant deregulation that’s hit EVERY state, red and blue. If CA was truly progressive, they would raise their corporate taxes to a sensible level, and put more money in the pockets of the working class, and voila, revenues increase, budget solved.

Ian, that is exactly what California tried. Tax corporations and spend on social projects. But what happens when corporations no longer are making profits? No taxes come in, expenses remain the same and the state goes into deficit and must borrow.

So they then turned to the middle class and asked them to vote to raise their own taxes. They said no. That is where we are literally today. What should they do? Remember big business and big corporations and big earners are no longer making profits.

Yes, look at California and see where a government run by progressives will take us.

California has already tried to tax itself to solvency and quickly discovered that it simply can’t tax high enough to dig itself out of the mess they are in. They are finding out too that the more they tax the worse it gets.

You’d think that raising taxes would automatically raise revenue but it doesn’t. The reason it doesn’t is because when taxes are increased people change how they make decisions in order to reduce the amount of taxes they pay..from putting off buying things, investing differently….finding ways around higher taxes.

When taxes are not as high revenue increases because the tax rate is tolerable and taxable activity will increase.

We’ve seen it over and over….when are people going to get it.

That wasteland Asay drew is the right-winger’s paradise. Since it’s impossible to raise taxes, the government has to cut government spending - which results in the wreckage you see.

  10. GNWachs

    GNWachsGenius_badge said, 4 months ago

Part of the problem California has had in trying to raise middle class taxes is the threats they use if taxes aren’t raised. We will cut X or Y or Z. But every single one of those benefits and handouts go to the lower economic classes and the middle class says if you make those cuts it will not effect my life in any possible significant way. So they vote no.

BTW, that is a very rational response. I face the same problem is promoting a school voucher system. The middle class is happy with their schools and see no benefits to them.

    Sigh,
It is the fault of both sides and California’s messed up voting districts. They are gerrymandered to hell. It is also the fault of a number of direct democracy policies that have not been working. CA needs a nonparisan rewrite of the voting districts and a Constitutional rewrite that doesn’t include current lawmakers or party hacks from either side. You can take wagers on the possibility.

So if we can make California and New York fail, the rest of the country will go down like dominoes. And us worthy people will be hanging with Jesus, and them stupid poor people will be sitting in the dirt wondering what happen.

And a democratic assembly. BTW the governor couldn’t get along with the Rep. senate either. Spitzer came in and was confrontational with both houses and couldn’t get much done before his little faux pax. Patterson is a waste of space. The only thing making him look good, right now, are the shennanigans of the Senate. Unfortunately, the internal rules of the senate make it an all or nothing proposition. If you your party controls the floor you’ve got it all, thus the ongoing squabble over leadership.

  23. PlainBill

There is a lot of idiocy on both sides of the issue, ANandy and the other conservatives don’t have a monopoly on it. The Primary cause of California’s troubles is Proposition 13. By making it impossible to raise taxes to meet California’s NEEDS, Howard Jarvis limited the state’s options.

The secondary cause is their (California’s Governors, Legislators, AND it’s citizens) unwillingness to modify their spending habits to conform to the limitations imposed by Prop 13. By spending money on non-essentials, they hastened the day they would find themselves without the ability to supply essential services.

Far from creating a better state, Jarvis and his followers sowed the seeds of destruction. Then the liberals watered those seeds. Only when the infrastructure deteriorates to the point people are willing to pay higher taxes will there be a solution. And since Jarvis ensured that that will require a 2/3 majority, it will take some time before that happens.

The only question is which philosophy will survive. I’m betting that when the people start lynching Republicans for opposing tax increases and both Democrats and Republicans for wild spending sprees will a solution be found.

  24. PUPPYSAURUS

    PUPPYSAURUSGenius_badge said, 4 months ago

PlainBill, I predict California will help tank the whole U.S. economy , so the question will be moot. (Everyone wants some one else to be the executioner). That’s what happens when the gutless and vain lead. (Since some people here do not realize it: “vain” also means ineffectual, vapid, useless, etc.)
Bull-Winky, I do not watch TheDailyShow, and prefer to keep it that way. So you’ll just have to interpret…or forget it.

Poor senor bullwinkle unable to understand demographics. Look, the rich in NY city do not constitute the entire population. They are a very small albeit high profile segment of the population. Who do you think does their laundry, waits tables, etc. Many of whom live in some some unpleasant conditions. In addition, again, the city is not the state.
I’m not sure WTH you mean about my name. It’s a screen name, nothing more or less.

The hard part of all this bickering is that regardless of who is in power, bad things will happen. It’s unavoidable. Mistakes will be made, corruption will happen, bureaucracy will be rampant. Whoever is in power at the time will be blamed and held up by his opponents as an example of the other party’s worthlessness. This back and forth nonsense of which party will run a better economy is moot at best. You can’t make all of the people happy all of the time. Heck, you can barely make a handful of the people happy part of the time! The best you can do is cast your vote and then hope whoever wins manages to pull you through.

And how come all the repubicans in new York have been replaced with RATS ? I figure that New York is about 50 / 50. I would not agree with poopy that New York is a conservative free zone ! although YOU seem to think so, FINE. I see the repubican governors and mayors. But repubicans always have skewed sense of reality.

The NY comments are kind of interesting. FWIW, I live in upstate NY, not NYC. My town currently has a Democratic majority in its town government but historically (as in, three years ago and before) has been Republican. Upstate NY is far more Republican than you might think. And now our fine state senate doesn’t know what it is other than split down the middle and stubborn.

Until the ill-fated Spitzer was elected, NY had a Republican governor and senate for 12 straight years. I don’t understand Howie’s laughter – unless he feels easter Republicans aren’t as good as wherever he’s from.

  37. PUPPYSAURUS

    PUPPYSAURUSGenius_badge said, 4 months ago

This is interesting. Maybe it gives one some insight on how different constituencies play out. Look at all the Mayors of NYC: Bloomberg, Giuliani, Koch, and that other Dem. guy who’s name I can’t remember - they could have all changed their respective parties and I don’t think the majority of us would have noticed, or cared. Maybe NYC economic strength and ethnic diversity anchors the political spectrum firmly in the “center” as a whole? I believe most Americans are more polarized electorally, prone to larger, more drastic shifts in voting habits, if subject to change at all.

  38. Gladius

    Gladius said, 4 months ago

NY has an extremely high tax rate and a very expensive social bill. The state politics are deceptive since the system in Albany is basically a version of machine politics. The problem right now is that they are in a very unusual position of fighting over the controls of the machine. According to my local news flash this evening the Senate is supposed to have worked out some sort of power sharing deal. I’ll believe it when I see the details.
