Why do automobile manufacturers have to design a new ingition switch (and many other items) in their cars each year? If last year’s ignition switch had showed no problems, why not use the same design again?

Rhetorical question? You’d think it would be a totally modular, interchangeable design. Businesses aren’t stupid when it comes to saving money (and are perfectly willing to gamble the health and safety of customers to save a few bucks), so there must be a good reason.

Federal anti theft laws keep changing to make it harder to steal cars, so the ignition switches have to keep changing.
