    The U.S. is between a rock and a hard place on this. If they cut defense to a sensible level the economy will crash. If they DON’T cut defense the defense spending will increase the debt to the level where the U.S. can no longer borrow money on the world market and the economy will crash. The best way out would be to being attacked by Canada or Mexico, deliberately lose that war and have the new overlords demilitarize the U.S.! This is how dire the situation is…

    The interstate highway system was actually a “defense” initiative that made sense, and it needs repair and upgrading, that could provide a lot of jobs to replace those “lost” if we stop buying junk from “defense” contractors. Maybe not “swords into plowshares”, but bombs into bridges makes a lot of sense.

    Already a number of Democratic congress-people have made motions to exempt the Defense cuts in their states.
    And Defense spending is a small part of the GDP – when compared to all the ‘entitlement’ spending.
    Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner for ‘disadvantaged’ children. Those original children are now Grandparents – and their children and grandchildren got fed at the government trough.
    And when did SSDI come into being? SS is a ‘retirement’ fund – not a way to give $ to folks ‘disabled’ by drug use.
    Unearned ‘Entitlements’ are way out of hand – and until you all recognize that – nothing will start to get better.

    In my case I have cancer than interfered with myt ability to work. I do not smoke and did not deliberately take carcinogenic drugs.
    .
    I will not live to retirement age. Not whining, several school chums have already died, that’s life.
    .
    But my point is I have donated to Social Security for 45 years and will get none back because I will not be here at 65.
    .
    I applied for SSI as that was the only way to get any of MY money back. The processing takes 120 days.
    The last time I saw the doctor 6 months was the optimistic estimate of my remaining life.
    I would not mind receiving painkillers for my colon, but such is life.
    .
