The only way for US to win is to get out – it’s either that or spend years and years and lives and lives trying to turn this mess into a democracy.

It will never be a “democracy” The religion/culture does not allow it. But it can be a coalition of non theocratic powers against the fundamentalist Taliban, as it was in the first heady days of the over throw.

Uh, that would be the military coup that overthrew the monarchy in 1973??? Many still want their king back.

And leave all your friends and allies in Afghanistan to be butchered by the warlords you opposed.

It’s the American way. Start a war and run away. Leave the mess for others to clean up.

agreed, and apologize. I meant this to be a NATO move…let the locals sort it out….they have to build / rebuild their own Nation

If we stay we will have to stay for a long, long time, spend tons of money, lose many lives. The thing to ask yourself is Afganistan worth it?

We have to make hard choices, we can be everywhere and do everything. Even for the terrorist Afghanistan is a side-show, their real efforts, and money, are in the middle east.

The Iraq war helped the terrorist and hurt the U.S. because it showed that, even with all of our technology, resources, and tanks we could be held down by a bunch of guys with road-side bombs. (Of course they had the advantage of the fact we had leaders that made many dumb decisions, never sent enough troops, and never had a plan.)

Magnaut: No apology necessary. I’m sure YOU didn’t start this war.

(Unless you VOTED for the American warlords who did….)

So America broke it; doesn’t it have the obligation to fix it?

Isn’t that what Powell said about Iraq? Surely it should apply to Afghanistan, too.

Based on the Pottery Barn rule: You break it, you own it

”It is said that I used the “Pottery Barn rule.” I never did it; Friedman did it … But what I did say … [is that] once you break it, you are going to own it, and we’re going to be responsible for 26 million people standing there looking at us. And it’s going to suck up a good 40 to 50 percent of the Army for years. And it’s going to take all the oxygen out of the political environment…”
