ACORN corrupting both our voting process and welfare system while tax dollars are taken from people like ME to pay them to do it… sorry, that’s a gd major story. MAJOR. Unless you WANT the US to wind up a literal banana republic, where “votes” mean nothing more than used toilet paper…
ACORN was a legitimate news story, and again kudos to Fox for breaking it. Britt is commenting on the tendency of the right-wing to focus attention on divisive issues while offering few, if any, positive ideas for larger problems.
I’d trust the right wing’s motives more if they were equally appalled and outraged by the scandals of Blackwater, KBR and Halliburton (and the recent scandal by the private firm providing security at our embassy). i haven’t heard a single voice of concern from the right over that.
If the voting-system was better there wouldn’t be any need for voter-registration-programs.
Take the german system for example: People register their place of residence at the city. Before every election people automatically get a notification about the date and they are also automatically added to the voting list. A simple passport or id is sufficient to vote. There is practically no voter fraud at all.
How is this for a liberal solution?
(A little addition: A country that claims to be a democracy for the people should give people the day off so they are able to vote. Or simply do it on a sunday.)
Shakey, no, it doesn’t. Especially KBR – that was not security related. It was, however, corrupt.
wittyvegan, I like that system, and I agree with getting a day off. Seeing as nearly as many people work on Sunday as any other day, that would hardly be a reasonable solution. However, perhaps holding the election over several days would make it possible for more to vote.
WITTYVEGAN: Personally, I like your plan. But it could never happen in this country. First, the ACLU would sue with regards to registering your residence with the govt in order to vote. If just one homeless person were denied the vote, the left would have a conniption. And the left is against showing ID, as simple as a photo drivers license, or even a state issued photo ID card, even if provided to the individual for free. Can you imagine their reaction to a proposal to show a passport?
Why don’t homeless people deserve the right to vote? If you haven’t noticed there has been an unprecedented wave of foreclosures… leaving a number of people homeless. You’re saying they don’t deserve to vote, or is there some other argument you’re making?
I am all up for showing ID, provided there is a system in place for folks that don’t have an ID but can otherwise vote legitimately.
Howie, I think there will be cartoons about Edwards once again. But it will be tricky to do because of Elizabeth Edward’s health issues and concern for her. The Sanford deal became comical all by itself because of his own words.
The more important point, however, is that officials are now looking into possible illegal use of campaign funds by Edwards. His problems are going to get worse, all his own doing. I feel empathy for Elizabeth Edwards who is fighting for her life and trying to keep a home for her children in whatever time she has left.
Edwards’ behavior (if some of the allegations are proved true) is worse than Sanford’s. It’s more calculated and even more deceitful by asking a long-time supporter, and married man, to claim the child was his, not Edwards.
LALAS: I never said homeless people don’t have a right to vote. Of course they do. I was just replying to WITTYVEGAN that the German system wouldn’t work because you have to register your residence with the government.
Ah, gotcha. Wasn’t sure if your argument was more along the lines of anti-illegal immigrant logic (which I acknowledge we need to figure out how to guarantee against illegitimate voters of all kinds).
A self-described liberal, award-winning editorial cartoonist Chris Britt nevertheless delights in skewering deserving politicians of every persuasion. Britt's sardonic, biting cartoons are sometimes controversial, often outrageous and always thought-provoking.

Where are the Edwards cartoons? Didn’t take much for the Sanford ones. Using BCS’s thoughts–if the left’s motives were equally etc., etc.

Thanks BCS. I was really only playing on your words above. I don’t care much for the behavior of either one.
