ANandy: Sometimes, the cure is worse than the disease, yes. But that isn’t the case here.

Did you know that 80% of the American public is behind the stimulus and economists on BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum agree with the plan?

Must suck to be so marginalized, huh? Don’t worry. We’ll accept you with open arms once you start thinking for yourself.

danielsangeo: I have great doubt about your statistics. Their are lies, bleeep (dam) lies and statistics.(Mark Twain)
The unfortunate fact is: by the time the impact of what our Idiot Congress and the Great Oz are doing to us will be beyond the point of no return. Our country is in a downward spiral. In twenty years you will recall this post.

  11. danielsangeo

    danielsangeo said, 9 months ago

Yes. It’s all the Democrats’ fault. We are on a downward spiral, but it’s not the Dems’ fault.

It’s the 20+ years of conservative economic policies of deregulation, laissez-faire capitalism and Friedmanism, and the (false) claim that any regulation or control is tantamount to communism, socialism, or Marxism that caused this mess.

  12. ANandy

I never claimed a party is to blame. I never defended a party. I will never defend a party. I am convinced our Constitution was inspired by Providence, but we have strayed so far from the Constitution, the instrument ratified by the sovereign states. What you have seen in the past 20+ years cannot be labeled conservatism. Read “Conscious of a Conservative” by the late Sen. Barry Goldwater. If you have an open mind, you will consider him a prophet.

  13. HUMPHRIES

    HUMPHRIESGenius_badge said, 9 months ago

danielsangeo, don’t waste too much time with ANandy. There are only two words in his vocabulary “idiot” and “Oz”, anything else escapes him.

  15. danielsangeo

    danielsangeo said, 9 months ago

“They’re not conservative”? I’m sorry but yes, they are. I’ve already read “Conscience of a Conservative.” Interesting book, but does not talk about modern conservatism. In fact, the “conservatives” that Goldwater talks about in his book is today’s liberal.

I know you may not believe that, but there it is. But, please continue to blast what you think to be “liberals”. Continue to spout your childish “great Oz” and “idiot Congress” terms. You’ll just continue to marginalize yourself and consign your argument to the lunatic fringe.

As I write this the Dow is down 400+ points. Is this hope we can believe in?.
Your comment is an indictment against the status quo.
To survive, we must return to the intent of the framers of the Constitution.

  17. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 9 months ago

andy, i really don’t think any president alone can be held responsible for the Dow … and if you’re faulting Obama, you must equally fault Bush …. the Dow has been on a wild rollercoaster ride for quite some time ….
it all seems as real as Monopoly money sometimes

  18. danielsangeo

    danielsangeo said, 9 months ago

The intent of the framers of the Constitution was that it was to be a living document that responded to the times. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have allowed the Amendment process.

As for the Dow, Obama’s been in office for less than a month! It’s going to take a lot longer than that to fix this ruined economy and get us back on track.

This stimulus package is a start, but we’ve got a long way to go. We need to spend a trillion on infrastructure alone to just bring it back up to snuff. You obviously don’t understand the true state of the economy and I doubt you ever will.

  19. ANandy

    ANandy said, 9 months ago

danielsangeo: so if it’s to be amended, amend it. Don’t just dream it up as we go. Where did you come up with this living document garbage? Are you aware that the Constitution did not provide for the taxation of individuals until the 14th Amendment, which allowed for the individual income tax? So how do we justify all the consumption taxes? Look at your telephone bill and the federal taxes on gasoline, etc.

    ADandy-
Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution (http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A1Sec8.html):
The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises,

Just because the income tax wasn’t in the original constitution doesn’t mean it’s illegal.

There’s also this group called the Supreme Court and, believe it or not, their entire job is to make sure that the laws of the US are consistent with the Constitution. If the Congress “went around” the Constitution the court would strike it down.

You rant around and scream non sequiturs, which I guess is your right, but could you please inform yourself first?

  21. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 9 months ago

ANandy, you wrote: “Where did you come up with this living document garbage?”
Article V of the Constitution: “The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress…” Emphasis mine.

“We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.” Jefferson Motive - you need to get your money back. Your high school history teacher must have been incompetant. Many of the “Founders” inc. Madison and jefferson relized tha the Constitution need flexibility. It was designed as a framework, not a straitjacket.

  27. deadheadzan

    deadheadzanGenius_badge said, 9 months ago

The Constitution is a document that must be ammended at times due to the changes in civilization as time goes by. The Founders were very aware of this and agreed with the need for ammendments.

  28. ColPappy

    ColPappy said, 9 months ago

The formal amendment process is cumbersome and time-consuming - and not at all democratic since a handful of the least populous states can prevent ratification - hence the neeed for interpretive flexibility.

  29. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 9 months ago

ColPappy - whitenoise is correct, I was citing the Constitution in favor of flexibility. I am well-educated in history, thanks, considered majoring in it.

I also agree that flexibility is key, and the courts are the key to interpreting it, which people don’t seem to get. They’re willing to let a President like Bush interpret it (and other laws) – which he is not entitled to do.
