Passed a deputy while I was going to work one morning. He was doing his paperwork on the steering wheel while driving down the interstate.

It’s the same dumb law here in MD. The drivers were bad enough before they started texting, but now nothing’s stopping them from geting worse. I saw a woman backing out of a parking spot while on the cell phone. Geez, do you think she could put the phone down for a minute until she completed her maneuvers?

If idiots could only harm themselves in car accidents, I’d be completely in favor of allowing texting while driving. The herd could use a little culling.

The law doesn’t take effect until October.

I imagine that the cop in the picture could pull that particular drive over for reckless driving without needing to wait until the law goes into effect.

Virginia has a law making texting while driving a primary offense. Won’t work. All you have to tell the officer is that you were looking up a phone number, dialing, etc. He/she can’t tell if you’ve been texting without getting a warrant to check your cell phone records.

All these new laws when simple old ones will work just as well. Don’t we have laws about driving while distracted?

Years ago Virginia Beach passed a law against eating and drinking on the beach. Reason: too much trash left on the beach. Question never answered: why don’t you enforce the littering law?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

When stupidity is outlawed, only outlaws will be stupid.

    @Ms. Ima

“This message was texted while driving and no one got hurt or a ticket!”
    .
But, if someone had been injured while you were distracted, no doubt you’d have found some way to pass the blame off to Obama.

Car makers keep putting MORE distracting devices in the dashboards, this is idiotic! Ah, but they put “backup cameras” in so folks don’t bother to look behind their vehicles before backing out of the driveway any more!

I’ve noted before, a friend and his friend on their motorcycles had stopped at a light. A gal on her cell phone ran over my friend’s friend, killing him, and he heard her say, “Just a minute, I think I hit something”. She was contacted by police, but not cited FOR ANYTHING after KILLING A MAN!! The state law at the time did not make texting or talking on a phone illegal, and I guess “distracted driving” is now just “expected”?

A number of years ago, I stopped at a red light. A number of seconds passed, as my passenger and I were commenting on how dangerous it was that three cars next to me turned left after the light turned red.

Suddenly, I was rear-ended by a car whose driver told the investigating officer that she was driving 45 mph, had no idea that the light was red, and had no idea that there was a car stopped in front of her. She was cited….for “driving too fast for conditions”, because it was sprinkling at the time.

Sometimes the problem is not the law, but the officer in charge of enforcing it.

I am sorry about your friend.

And I am sorry that PAJ had to read this post.

I do not text while driving, I do not make or take calls while driving either. I let calls go to voice mail. I pull over and check the phone ASAP. My reason has nothing to do with any law. My reason is I am too afraid of having a wreck to even try it.
